Brandin Cooks Comparisons

I've been thinking a lot about Cooks from the BS thread talk that he is only a possession receiver. What are your expectations from him?
I posted these similar statured players career YPC avg-
Career Avg YPC
5-10 178 DeSean Jackson 17.7
5-10 185 Santonio Holmes 15.5
5-10 183 TY Hilton 15.4
5-9 185 Steve Smith 14.5
Oldtimers
5-9 175 Mel Gray 18.9
5-11 200 DEVERY 17.9
5-9 185 Mark Duper 17.4
I see similarity to several of these in different aspects. Thinking more another player that I could see Cooks reflecting even more is what Randall Cobb has become. Both slot and downfield effectiveness and is in running plays too. They both broke into the NFL under age 21 also. His 2014 stats are a reasonable expectation for Cooks breaking out as a #1 go-to guy.
5-10 191
91 catches
1287 yds
13.4 ypc
12 TDs
11 rushes
37yds
What say ye? What do you see for stats, role, or player comparison?

Not really answering your question, but I'll say this...He's a complete WR, not a possession WR. That guy saying he was a possession WR kind of pissed me off.

In terms of skill set Randall Cobb is exactly what comes to mind.

Antonio Brown/Randall Cobb are the best comparisons. All similar skill sets, same size.

I'll say a few things. We've seen glimpses of this and that but we need to see him more on the field and see how his game and style developes. I certainly see traits of many people. Truth be told, if he has a blend of many of the wr's we talk about, he'll be very very good.
You can sit here and throw out Antonio Brown, Steve Smith, Randall Cobb certainly... he'll be just fine. He's got the ability to take screens and slants to the house and hopefully develops the knack for the long ball. He's a multi purpose weapon that seems to have the right attitude and inner drive to become great. Certainly has the right qb to do so for another couple years.

Then its the Grayson to Cooks combo

So I compared him to Emmanuel Sanders last year preseason and was bashed because most didn't think Sanders was that good. I still believe that is the most on point comparison.

Not cool bro.
Its B to C, not G to C

I don't think he's limited to being a possession WR. He has the talent to be more and his stature isn't going to be the deciding factor.
But, I don't think you should ignore the fact that last year, his YPC wasn't anywhere near the guys you listed.

The poster's argument was bc his YPC was low, he is automatically a possession WR. When most people think about possession WR, they think about those 3rd down guys that all they do is move chains. Lance Moore & Colston are possession WRs.

Look at the routes he ran last year. In the early part of the year, most of his looks were under 5 yards from LoS and a lot of those were passes behind the LoS.

Sanders is not a better comparison than Cobb and Brown to me. Just watching all 3 of these a lot I don't see him as Sanders.

Correct, of eligible WRs he was 83 out of 89 in YPC. By defintion that's a possession WR...a WR who catches a lot of balls with a low average. Not sure why so many are getting upset. Jarvis Landry is also a possession WR, as is Welker. Edelman too. Do they occasionally make big plays? Yes sure but the majority of their catches are the dump off short gain variety.

As CocoLoco pointed out in that other thread, it was obvious they were just starting to define his role when he got injured.
First 5 games averaged 6.2ypc
Next 5 games averaged 10.5ypc
I liked his rushing too. 7 for 73yds. I think we'll see plenty more of that.

Too small of a sample size...if you want to be as intellectually honest as possible you use the whole season.

They don't have the skill set of Cooks though. He has elite speed and can burn defenses. These guys don't do that.

The argument could also be that if you want to be intellectually as possible, then you would look at the trend to see how the team was using him as the season progressed. In those first 5 games he may have had one target over 20 yards, the next 5 games he had at least 1 target over 20 yards each game. There was a definite change in how they were utilizing him; either way, I don't think you can define anyone as a certain type of WR just off of 1 season (unless they have a very limited skill set).

I don't see him putting up 15+YPC considering he catches a lot of really short passes, bubbles screens, etc. But he's a lot more than a possession receiver. Anywhere from 12-14 YPC on the season is a good guess.

Steve Smith. He can beat you anywhere on the field and has the will to be a great player. Plus size comparisons. Also a great catcher.
Only thing you can't say yet about him that you could about Smith is that Smith could beat double teams consistently.

Antonio Brown in his 1st year posted an AVG of 10.4.
Randall Cobb in his 2nd year posted an AVG of 11.9.
Jordy Nelson in his 1st year posted an AVG of 11.1.
Does that mean they are possession receivers too?
Because as their game IQ improved, their routes began to change a whole lot. They were able to read defenses better and as a result became players who can run a full route tree and make plays.
Resulting in Brown's last 4 years averaging around 14, Nelson's last 4 years averaging around 16, and Cobb's last 2 years averaging around 14.
But sure, possession receiver he is.
Top 10 Leaders in receiving the past 3 years (WR only):
2014: A.Brown (129), D.Thomas (111), J.Jones(104), E.Sanders (101), G.Tate (99), J.Nelson (98), and J.Edelman (92)
2013: P.Garcon (113), A.Brown (110), A.Johnson (109), J.Edelman (105), B.Marshall (100), AJGreen (98), K.Wright (94), D.Bryant (93), D.Thomas (92), and A.Jeffery (89)
2012: C.Johnson (122), B.Marshall (118), W.Welker (118), A.Johnson (112), R.Wayne (106), AJGreen (97), D.Thomas (94), and R.White (92)
