Trying to incorporate rugby into football?
4 punts in 4 years, so he sometimes punts but has a 77-17 record as well.

Dude is coaching like he's playing PlayStation, love it.

Did he really not already assume that the team with more 20 yards plays has a decent winning percentage? Thats just common sense. Teams that have more first downs probably win usually too. Those are signs of a better team.

Early James was the qb at Hahnville and punter. He could run, throw, or punt. That dude was a legit, tough qb.

Saw this on Real Sports.
The coach was bitter about not being hired by a college team. I don't think its because of his strategy, I think its because he comes off like a smug prick. I bet he interviews terribly.
I love the strategy though and it seems to be working.
My guess is there is a sweet spot for punting/onside kicking. The segment interviewed another guy who talked about that. Never punting between the 40's or with less than 8 yards to go, etc.
This coach will go for it on 4th and 30 from his own 5, which I don't feel can be justified.
ETA:
If you can stand Bryant Gumble for 10 minutes, this segment was worth it.

I'm wondering when someone in divisions II or III tries never punting and always onside kicking. You figure that someone will eventually try it at that level especially if you're at a school that hasn't won in years.

If a college coach tried this shite I would love to see it on the field.

Columbia looked into him, but backed off. I am pretty confident in saying its more because he comes off like POS in interviews.

I played for Coach Kelley and I'd run through a wall for him.

I never said he WAS a prick, just that he came off in that Real Sports with Bryant UncleTom as a really smug prick.
It'd be fun as hell to play for him though, thats for sure. Did he have the crazy strategy when you played for him?

He was still an assistant when I was at PA under Coach Norwood, who had a very Bobby Bowden type of personality. We weren't super talented but we won a lot of games just on conditioning and discipline. We could hang with teams like Shiloh Christian (who had a coach named Gus Mahlzan) for a while but eventually they would pull away. Never won state while I was there.
Coach Kelley was a very intense guy and would do anything to win. He'd chew you a new one if you messed up or didn't give 100% but he'd also be the first person to give you praise if you made a play.

Not really
There are a lot of other metrics like turnover margin, total yards, red zone success that could be deemed very important.
The fact that he discovered there was that strong of a correlation between this one statistic is pretty interesting.

quote:It's definitely somewhere between this guy and how ridiculously conservative most NFL coaches are. But I think the NFL guys should be soooooo much more agressive, just seems too logical to go for it in so many of these situations.
My guess is there is a sweet spot for punting/onside kicking

quote:Exactly. The "more plays over 20 yards than an opponent" is essentially an indicator variable of team's quality and performance. Clearly having more big plays is a good goal anyways, but just arbitrarily increasing 20 yard plays as an outcome with maximum inherent value seems like a misinterpretation and extrapolation of the data.

quote:The same holds true for this metric as the ones you listed. They are all correlates of one another and indicators of performance. It would be foolish not to have a goal to increase the big plays; however, if the sole focus is on that, at the expense of other aspects (e.g., ball security in a hook and ladder; more 3 and outs) then the 81% win probability would likely decrease.

Everyone talks about him going for it all the time but I bet he wouldn't do so without the talent advantage in most games. NFL coaches are so conservative bc every team is within 10 points of each other.
