re: Tipping is out of control in America - can we abolish it?

I've always felt if you can't afford to tip 15-20% for good service , you can't afford to eat there.
That said , I have no problem leaving nothing for shitty service. That was almost the case last night but the girl explained herself ( in charge of the floor, had to help the other servers with computer problem), admitted and apologized for terrible service , proceeded to knock 10% off of the bill. In return she still wound up with roughly 15%.

Spent almost 5 years in Europe, Asia, the ME, and Africa, and will 100% back up that tipping in this country is out of control. And I'm a good tipper (want to avoid some stereotypes) who gives 20-25% to wait staff, about 25% to my barder, and various amounts to movers and other service people. It's practically another fricking tax.

"it's not tipping i believe in. it's overtipping"

I can see tipping declining in our life time. Not for all the reasons you listed, but because of discrimination.
It's one of the only institutions in which you're still aloud to discriminate in any fashion you choose. If you don't like the server's hair, nose ring, accent, skin color, perfume, attitude, tattoos, blah, blah, blah. I can see SJWs taking it, although I bet most SJWs make tips.

You've never served in a restaurant before. People 95% of the time are going to tip whatever % they gon tip, regardless of the job you do.
It depends heavily on the type of restaurant. If you work in a chain restaurant with limited repeat customers than you will tips that are fairly even across the board regardless of quality of service. However, if you work in local restaurant with a high percentage of repeat customers, you see a lot of variety in tip compensation throughout the waitstaff. I managed a place that was the latter and tip compensation varied greatly with our waitstaff. In fact, we would review it every few months and actually let people go if they were consistent low tip earners.

I go about my life with this simple rule: if your interaction with a business is mostly based on the service provided by an individual and they are paid less than what I think they should be paid by their company then I tip.
Then you shouldn't tip at restaurants, because you wouldn't be there if not for the food.

I just got some photos printed out at a drug store. The girl printed my photos and made sure they were in the right envelope, then checked me out. She was fairly attractive.
Should I have tipped her?

If these restaurants don't tip how much should the servers make? I ask b/c some servers can make 100-200 easy for a few hours if not much more at nicer restaurants. Will the servers start making $15/hr? Or perhaps let the customers know they make $10/hr and suggest a $1 tip?
Also I think it would be better for restaurants and perhaps other business to pay the employees by the % of sales. If employees know they will be paid a higher % off better sales, wouldn't their service be just as good or better when relying on tips, which aren't a given.

That's between the employees and the business. In places where tips are not common they make a percentage of sales which is essentially what tipped servers make now so nothing changes there except there's a level of consistency. No more getting stiffed by the non-swimmers.

No. frick no. That doesn't solve anything.
Just automatically add 18% to everyone's bill and then we can not even have to worry about it and most importantly, we don't have to listen to people complaining about getting stiffed on tips.

Why? Why not tip the cashier at Target?
Because the couple restaurants I get takeout from, I'm usually picking it up at the bar. I don't do fast food, and would never tip if I did.

I'd worry about the unintended consequences of abolishing tipping, beyond just the incentive to not give good service.
It would cause bars/restaurants to question their business hours. In all but the busiest of urban/tourist centers it would become cost prohibitive to be open during non-peak times. Bar drinking for shift workers, degenerates, and people that just want a dang beer at 3:16pm on a Tuesday would be a thing of the past.

Urban waiterstaff-oriented dining would sharply decline

$12 ticket? $3 tip.
$20 ticket? $5 tip.
$50 ticket? $6 tip.
$100? $10 tip.

I used to think it was funny when I was a NAPA delivery driver making $8.00/hr.
Pizza man brings a pizza that weighs a couple pounds and lasts you one or two meals, gets a tip.
I bring a clutch / radiator / car battery that's heavy as shite and lasts for years right to your work bench and never got or expected a tip.

The thread we had a while back about tipping hairstylist was out of control. I don't understand why tip a hairstylist. They are getting all of the money from the price of haircut
Unless they own the salon or booth rent then no, they do not get all the money from the hair cut. At most places, they are getting 50% of the cost. The salon takes the other half. Some places do a 50/50 split and then take a service charge off of the stylists 50%. It works out to them getting only around 42% or so depending where they work.
So remember that next time you get a haircut, if you are getting a $30 cut and they do a damn good job and moved you appointment around for you at the last minute they may be making less than $15 off of you. A little tip would be nice.
Many people don't tip salon owners because they do keep 100%. That, to me, seems fair enough plus they usually charge the most anyway.
