I was not expected to tip at any restaurants I went to overseas....and service was consistently good.

The attitude that some of the help that posts in these threads have usually inspires me to tip much less for a while. I think many of you that complain about tips may suck at your job and not realize it.

Europeans have no concept of tipping because their wait staff doesn't make below minimum wage and get fricked based on what they should get in tips. ANYONE complaining about tipping at a restaurant in the U.S. needs to stick to drive'thru places.

Why don't restaurants just charge more for their food and then pay their employees more?

Think about it. If you're a good tipper, you're getting screwed. Your good tips balance out the shite tips that other people leave. And you get nothing more than what a bad tipper gets, unless it's a place you frequent very often and get waited on by the same person.

Hell, I'd be okay with just flat percentage upcharge for those who dine-in

This already exist. It's 20% for those with any class.

Why am I tipping furniture delivery guy? Once furniture is delivered, I have gotten what I needed. It is not likely I utilize a delivery person of that nature even on yearly basis. I have zero to gain for giving him money besides some self-perceived warm and fuzzies.

If that is what you want to spend your money on, then more power to you.

A little known fact is that most restaurants only pay their wait staff $2.15/hour, as they expect to get tips to supplement the meager pay. During high school and summers in college my daughter worked night shift at a popular local Greek restaurant and sometimes got $150-$200/night in tips. Some nights she got less than $40/shift. The day shift were all male waiters and they usually got $300/shift due to the larger lunch crowds downtown. They only used men during the day because most women would fold under the pressure. I can't tell you how many times she came home in tears about some customer who would demand the world and leave nothing or a few bucks. As many already know, most black customers did not tip and they were the most demanding.
