The only schools that don't care about rivalries are the teams that truly don't have any
We talking about whether college football needs them to remain as great as it is? And dogging rivalries just to do it is lame, and weird.

quote:I don't get it. I didn't know there was a rivalry vs non rivalry "thing" going on. Are rivalries in danger or something? Seems like we're arguing over what our favorite ice cream is. Is the Iron Bowl important? I mean, I love the shite out of it. I don't care about Oregon vs Oregon State though. But if their fans like it, then by all means, play the shite out of that game.
posters that are fans of teams that don't really have a rivalry or have lost theirs due to realignment say "rivalries don't matter anymore" and posters that are fans of teams that still have big rivals say "of course rivalries matter"
I think I'm reading too much into this

its hard for a team like baylor to have rivalries that mean anything.
The sucked for a long time.
the last coach there with a record above 500 left in 92 and he was barely above 500.
They are just starting to get competitive again now

If money ever got so god damn important that Ole Miss couldn't play a GAME against LSU and Miss State, I think I would be done with college football.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you weren't raised in the south. If so, there is no point in explaining to you how important some of these games are because you will never experience that culture.

The problem you are having is you are taking a lot of the emotion out of it which is why you think rivalries aren't a big deal. The great part about rivalries is that it doesn't have to have a lot on the line in the scheme of national championship or even your conference. It is an enemy that you have history against (for good or bad) and because of that tradition of playing each other you want beat that person even more so than the random other school.
Every sport and almost all aspects of our lives gravitate towards rivalries:
Yankee's/Red Sox
Falcons/Saints
High schools
Your teammates
Your siblings
Republican's/Democrats
That uppity a-hole in the office
etc.
They are a part of the human psyche and yes the sport would be much much worse if you forced college teams to play random other schools every year. The only hope you would have is to be able to meet your rival in the playoff so you could beat them to a NC.

That has nothing to do with it. The notion that you should think about other schools when making your own decisions is beyond idiotic for so many reasons
Posted on 8/13/15 at 11:20 pm to WestCoastAg
quote:Woah, what? Why don't you understand that? It's not that I think the Iron Bowl is THAT important. It's that I can't imagine there being a reason SO important that they stopped playing it(I know it has happened before). Under what circumstances should an Alabama or Auburn fan say, "yep, we have to stop playing the Iron Bowl right now. We just can't pass up this opportunity over here."
and this is the line of thinking that I just don't understand

Once again, I'm not saying rivalries are stupid. I've said many times they are fun. Just that they aren't nearly as important to college football as gets thrown around on here and the rant
Posted on 8/13/15 at 11:23 pm to ReauxlTide222
Really? Let's say for whatever reason the SEC was going to shite and Alabama could get out, but for whatever reason it had to leave auburn behind. You would not want Alabama to put itself in a better situation?

OK obviously we are talking on two seperate wave lengths. What is your idea of whats important?
Posted on 8/13/15 at 11:25 pm to flyAU
Just that there are numerous things more important than "preserving" rivalries and that the notion that college football would somehow be "worse off" without them is misguided
Posted on 8/13/15 at 11:26 pm to WestCoastAg
Just name the numerous things.
Posted on 8/13/15 at 11:27 pm to flyAU
I don't know, national championships, games against highly ranked teams, the playoffs, having 4 or 5 strong power conferences, the adoption of 9 conference games across the board. I would say all of those topics/issues are of more importance

Ok I see what you're arguing now. If that happened, I might be fine with leaving Auburn behind. But I didn't go to either school, so my opinion shouldn't hold much weight.
I could never imagine that happening though. I don't think the SEC will ever go to shite. And it's shite will still be better than everyone else's shite. It gives me a headache listening to my FSU friends talk about their seasons. "Ok we have Texas Southern then Wake then BC then Syracuse then Duke and UNC and USF and NC State and Chattanooga." I'd fricking die if that's who Alabama played each year. How is that even fun? I'd never give up a rivalry with Auburn and all the other SEC games to go play that shite.

Backyard Brawl (technically in the South half the time)
Michigan v Michigan State
Minnesota v Wisconsin
Civil War
All are BIG TIME rivalry games not in the South.
I'd like to see WVU play Penn State again once in a while.
Baylor v TCU is a rivalry. Briles' ego is just so big he won't acknowledge it. It's also a pretty even series. Baylor currently leads the series 52-51-7... but it will be even again after this year.
ETA:
FWIW - Bricks are also nice but not really necessary.

The argument doesnt even need to be that the SEC is going to shite, just that if Alabama, or any other school, is presented with an opportunity where they can put themselves in a better situation than they are already in, but they have to stop playing their rival for whatever reason. I think it would be dumb to choose that one game over what's better for the program
