It's just as ridiculous to say that they would.

That tournament is such an afterthought until literally the semifinals.

It’s also not the pinnacle of aspiration for their careers.

I can see reasons to want to play for my "paying" club as well as Olympic qualifying. I personally don't think it an easy answer one way or the other( Each player likely to have very different views). Now, if it were the actual Olympics or a senior national team meaningful game, that would change the calculation greatly.

I never thought I'd be engaged in a debate over qualifying for the Olympics vs playing a weeknight game somewhere in Central America, but here we are....

If it wasn't because Atlanta United is holding players back, it wouldn't even be a debate on here.

No one grows up wanting to play in the CCL. Tons of kids grow up wanting to be an Olympian. This isn’t even a debate. Plus the play in rounds for CCL where you play in some shithole country on some shithole field vs representing your country for a chance to play on one of the biggest national stages... duh.

Neither is a U23 tournament.

No one said that.

However, the u23 tournament gives them a better chance of impressing the full national team than early round CCL matches do.

These gaus are already close to the full national team. Getting a good start with their new manager will do more for them than playing in Olympic qualifying.

And the team Atlanta is playing is likely better than anyone the U23s would play in qualifying.

Atlanta needs to get a fricking grip if they really feel the need to force these kids to go play a Costa Rican team in a tournament that means nothing for the status of their club over a once in a lifetime opportunity of playing in the Olympics.

I think they fully expect to lose these players for one national team competition this summer.

Their stance hasn’t reflected that to this point.

I’ll admit I definitely didn’t see this move working out for him. I never thought he’d see the field as much as he has. Props to him, and I hope he figures into the next manager’s plans, because I fear Pirlo’s days are numbered.

That's a steal for price wise based on how much he's already contributed.
