As an animal lover, I'm instantly repulsed by this story. But the rational person (that should exist in all of us) accepts the lesser of 2 evils. We can either choose to monetize exotic animals, legally, (hopefully humanely), and professionally. If done, there is no question the conservation efforts should be successful. Why? There will be a profit motive for those in charge of the animals.
On the other hand, if you make all harvesting of the animals illegal - they will be hunted, illegally, by poachers, to the point of extinction. We've already seen it in many areas in Africa. Africa isn't run all that well to begin with. I have a lot of respect for the wardens trying to protect the elephants, particularly, but they're outgunned, outmanned and overwhelmed.
We can either live with this, somewhat repulsive, legal market for the animals or we can have them exist only in memory. I do not think there is a clear 3rd option, unless 100% of these populations are confined to zoos (where, by and large, most of them do not thrive.)

Ummmmmmm.
Not saying this Walter Palmer person isn't a POS, but the "Professional Hunter" pictured with him in this photo and this other photo seems like the bigger TPOS.

He should have been the one to have 'known better' I highly doubt this dentist from MN was the one doing all of the legwork and luring. Just my two cents.

Welcome to Pierre Vorster Safaris
Come and join Pierre Vorster Safaris in this brand new African Experience. We offer our clients the opportunity to experience African Hunting at its best. After 16 years in the industry we know what the discerning hunter to Africa desires and we can fulfill those wishes with a 5 star experience.
Company History and Overview
Pierre was born in South-Africa in 1965. He was introduced to the outdoors by his dad at the tender age of 8. He started hunting small birds and later progressed to stalking squirrels and rabbits with his BB gun. He did the usual "biltong" hunting until he was exposed to big game hunting in Botswana in 1984. Accompanied by some friends they hunted lion in the Kalahari and buffalo in the Okavango Delta. This triggered his passion for big game hunting and the seeds for a future career in the Professional Hunting Arena were sown.
He attended school in the well known Diamond Town of Kimberley and studied law at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.
Due to the ever changing Safari environment, a decision was taken in 2010 to establish a brand new venture in the form of Pierre Vorster Safaris. As the logo rightfully states this is a matter of "QUALITY FORGED BY EXPERIENCE SINCE 1984".
Today Pierre concentrates all his hunting in the Southern part of Africa. Sharing his time guiding in South-Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia he can provide his clientele access to Top Class areas in these prime hunting destinations. Pierre lives in Pretoria and is married to Amanda. They are the proud parents of Megan.

Bunch of anti-dentites in this thread.

Have you ever once thought that the reason people don't like you isn't because they are insecure or however you justify it, but because you are an insufferable prick?

I hate trophy hunting.
Anytime I go somewhere that has an animals head hanging on the wall, I lose any desire to hang out with that person anymore.

That's a different discussion IMO.
In general, I think monetized hunts that go toward conservation are fine, assuming the money goes to what it is supposed to and has the impact of precluding poaching due to the financial incentive.
The people who partake, IMO, are pieces of shite for the most part who want to pay thousands to have someone hand them a rifle and pose for a facebook picture.
This is an entirely different situation, as the animal was taken illegally and in secret, and the poacher destroyed a very popular creature for his own fricking vanity.
I hope he loses everything.

I liked how they changed their Facebook page from "River Bluff Dental" to just "River" in the hopes of making them harder to find in a search.

agree, but if you eat meat you have no right to judge this guy
The ducks and squirrels I shot winded up being eaten. The cows that were killed for my pleasure are bred for food.
This lion was killed only to be hung on a wall.

Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, is believed to have paid £35,000 to shoot and kill the much-loved lion with a bow and arrow. The animal was shot on July 1 in Hwange National Park. Two independent sources have confirmed the hunter's identity to the paper, which has also seen a copy of the relevant hunting permit.

Have you ever thought you're still a little bitch that wanted to meet me irl to fight and sent pathetic emails to me? But this will be the point where you try to act like you're more mature, but your soft arse can't handle someone on the Internet without wanting to fight them. You're a joke. I couldn't give one shite what you think of me, where as you're so bothered by a poster on a forum that you emailed me to meet to fight. Who gives a shite about your opinion?

Nope.
Didn't read the rest because you don't matter. Have a great day arguing with strangers that don't like you. You make this too easy.
