Just pick West Ham United. Based in London, lots of history, young and improving team, moving into the Olympic stadium, competing in Europa, co-owner David Sullivan is a porn baron, and not a big 4/5 team.

Don't listen to any of these jabronis if they're telling you who to pick. You need to watch games. Otherwise you'll decide on a team like Liverpool arbitrarily and then you'll be miserable when you realize all of your follow Scouser supporters are drug dealers and ex cons.

I will say this to the OP. Having a team avoid relegation is a completely different feeling and rooting interest than anything else you've likely experienced. I'm sure it feels awesome to have your team win the league and play champions league football, but watching them avoid relegation and having the fear of essentially losing the awesome access we have here on NBC is intense as hell. When it is achieved (often too close for comfort) the relief you feel is a pretty unique experience. Fear is pretty exciting driving emotion to feel (at least for me) while watching "important" matches for your club. It's kind of an adrenaline rush.

Man U is the most popular because they were the only team anyone knew until like 10 years ago.
Liverpool and Arsenal are the hipster choices so you get to support a big club and live in fake torment about how close you are and claim your aren't really a bandwagon fan because you never really win anything.
City are terrorists.
Tottenham is irrelevant.
With Chelsea you always have a chance and you get to root for a model professional named Eden Hazard, some other scum, and have the greatest manager in the game.
The choice is yours
Outside of a few alterations I had to make, this is pretty spot on.
Frankly, Manchester United is the club people love to hate. In terms of recent success, supporting Chelsea is just as much of a "glory chaser" decision.
Really, just choose a team you enjoy watching or want to support for any reason whatsoever. I chose United due to a damn Nintendo 64 game. It's like Harry Potter. The wand chooses the wizard, except in this situation it's which team's players make your wiener stand up. Also, as long as you're not constantly a superfan of every team that's having a good run of form, it's alright to support a few clubs for a while. Once you commit to a club, you need to stick with that shite so it's understandable.
I support loads of teams when they're not playing United for random reasons here and there. I have teams in every league and division that I support from Charlton Athletic to any team that Zlatan may play for that isn't named Chelsea. It's also fine to enjoy watching a team you hate or admiring a player on a team you hate. I've despised Chelsea since they crawled out of the depths of mediocrity covered in oil and vodka, but I love watching Eden Hazard and respected the shite out of Drogba.
Really, dude, just have fun with it and choose a team you won't mind taking a few licks for. It doesn't need to be a winner or popular pick. shite, every year I find a team in a relegation battle to pull for to stay up. That's almost as much if not more fun than when I'm supporting United, especially a Moyes lead United.

Chelsea is probably the most Yankee like team in the EPL.
Multi billionaire owner who spends like crazy.
Great manager who is also a complete a-hole. (I like him though).
I've been watching for about 15 years and I don't have a team. I have some I like and some I don't and never felt a need to act like I grew up within 2 blocks of the stadium.

Not at all. I'm sure some are and some aren't. I do think some people could not point out their team on a map though.

Maybe. If someone is that sensitive, they are probably the ones I am thinking about.

Heh guys I'm diving headfirst into EPL this year and am looking forward to following soccer for the first time in my life
I was trying to do the same thing last year, had always followed La Liga, but Men in Blazers got me into the EPL. I really tried to become an Everton fan, but it just felt right. After watching the season, I believe I found my team in Crystal Palace. Why? I have no idea, but I found myself watching more and more of their games as the season went on. Never going to worry about winning the league, but the threat of relegation is always real
