This is in my top 3 favorite comic book movies of all time. Also, Zack Snyder

I think most of the dislike for this movie comes from people who read the novel/comic. I didn't read it so I absolutely love this movie

It may be the best superhero movie ever made. It's so good that it consistently flies above critics' heads. People will look back on this movie and call it a masterpiece.

That about sums it up.

Extended cut of this movie really adds in some missing pieces.

Im starting to wonder if some of you actually understand the story. Ozymandias' plan is to manipulate the Soviet Union and the US into making peace. The novel's ending accomplishes this in an awesome way that reinforces the idea of the sick humor of reality. It is a narrative that runs through the entire novel (the Comedian).
Why on earth would Dr Manhattan killing 2 million Americans cause peace? He was a war tool of the American government.

I see it as a fine companion piece to the novel, but it just doesn't work that great as a movie. It's long and still manages to feel rushed. It wants to feel like Blade Runner but has these corny, overly-stylized fight scenes with cartooney violence, hence the tone is all over the place. Some really bad, distracting performances too. The Comedian is the most interesting character in the movie, and it hurts when he's not on screen. The movie wants to be weird but wouldn't commit to the weirdest part of the book, and Jon frame-up doesn't work. The destruction of NY hits with a huge thud.
In the end, Snyder didn't want to make a movie that existed as its own thing, with its own identity. He made the book and it only half works.
Agree. Missing a few core themes of the GN was huge though.

So you didn't like the movie?

Nope. The whole idea doesn't work without the squid.
The WHOLE point of the plan was to unite the world against an alien attack.
The problem with switching the squid to Dr Manhattan is that we all know that Dr. Manhattan is omnipotent.
There is no hope. He can't be defeated. The squid could be defeated.
I still like the movie although it just didn't live up to the awesomeness of the first trailer.

It is, on a basic level, the same end point.
Dr. Manhattan attacks both sides, killing millions.
As I said, the general outcome of both movie and GN is that humanity unites through fear of a common foe, all based on a massive lie.
Does it deliver as well as the GN? No, but the general message is the same.

I didn't really think of that. Yea, it does hurt the end theme.
I don't think it ruins the movie though.

All of this.
Manhattan could do whatever he wanted. Teleport to the core of the earth and burn it out. Game Over.

I'm a huge fan of both the graphic novel and the movie. Everything you said is true but.....it's a giant squid. I feel like the movie would have lost most of the audience that didn't read the book. They would have had to add all the little side stories about the missing artists and stuff to an already lengthy film.
I think the current ending works just as well. The fact that Dr. Manhattan couldn't be defeated doesn't matter because part of the plan was for him to leave. He's only a potential threat to mankind. The world will still unify and work together to find a way to stop another attack from Dr. Manhattan. Whether or not they find a successful method doesn't even matter.

No one is aware of this power though - he has not shared his omnipotence with the public.
I think it is a fine movie that stands on its on. The book readers (and I am one) try to compare the two, unfairly I may add. The novel has so much going on that it is almost impossible to trace every nuance to a movie without expanding it to impossible lengths.

I think the point of using Dr Manhattan for the ending was to show him telling humans to knock it off or else. He was basically sending a warning. Even Ozymandias didn't know he was invincible until right before the end. There was a great quote after Ozymandias tried to kill Manhattan
Right there it was settled, even for the smartest man in the world, that Manhattan was invincible.
quote:
I've walked across the surface of the sun. I've seen events so tiny and so fast they hardly can be said to have occurred at all. But you... you're just a man. And the world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite.

But the goal of the plan was to unite the world. Which worked with both plans.

This.
And if the world's smartest man thought that he could defeat Manhattan, why wouldn't the less intelligent leaders have the same (if not greater) misconception that he could be stopped?

It's one of my favorite films and I watch it repeatedly. It's one of the few films that I keep on my phone and other devices.
The first trailer is at the top of my list of movie trailers. The Friday that they released the trailer, I watched it over and over for the entire afternoon. It is also on my phone.
It isn't a perfect film or adaptation, but Snyder did the best that he could do. I'm not a total fan of the music selection and the casting of Silk Spectre, but other than that I have no problems with it.
There are scenes and segments that are so close to the comic, it's just uncanny. The filmed origin of Dr. Manhattan still gives me chills.
I can understand fans of the comic being upset. Reading those issues as they were originally released was heart wrenching and made a huge impact on everyone. But Snyder had to make some hard choices and I think he made them correctly.
When the film came out I had to buy multiple copies of the TPB. My kids' friends kept borrowing mine, so I just gave them copies to lend out.

And everyone should watch the Director's Cut. The biggest improvement is that the edits are less choppy. Snyder is able to segue a lot smoother between scenes.
