My biggest problem with this film is that they completely botched the ending. Most of this comes down to the absence of a short exchange between Veidt and Manhattan. Their exchange isn't present in the movie, yet it was extremely pivotal in rounding off a major point the story was trying to make.

In the comic, Veidt asks Manhattan if he did the right thing in the end. Manhattan responds with,"In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends." First, this shows that Veidt at least holds some doubt about the morality of his actions. Secondly, Manhattan's response points out to Veidt that the peace he "created" is not going to last, and Adrian is foolish for thinking it would. He didn't allow Veidt to get away with it because it was the morally correct choice to make. He let Veidt get away with it because he can't change what's already been done, and the only thing they can do is try to savor the peace for as long as it lasts.

But in the movie, that's not what happens. Adrian is completely secure in his decision to kill millions, and displays no doubt or concern that he might have done the wrong thing. Furthermore, Manhattan, who has just "regained" his humanity, simply says he's not going to condone or condemn the killing of millions of people because it brought peace. It makes Manhattan look dumb, and completely negates the humanity that he just gained.

Sure, they somewhat use Manhattan's quote at the very end of the film when Laurie comments that Jon would say "nothing ever ends." But here, it's completely out of context and doesn't hold the same meaning as it does in the comics. In the comics, the quote is used at a very specific moment to drive a point across. Just because it's included later on doesn't mean that the story drives home the same point. To me, it just says that the writer's didn't fully understand the purpose of the story.

The Dr. Manhattan origins scene is my favorite part of the movie. I'll pop the bluray in just to watch that scene.

Same here. I'm not a huge Zack Snyder fan but I have to praise him, and I mean REALLY praise him, for his use of Philip Glass music during Dr. Manhattan's backstory. I think we can all agree that playing "Pruit Igoe" when Jon gets locked in the chamber was absolutely freaking genius. That scene gives me goosebumps every time.

I hear people argue this all the time, and yet no one has ever explained what they actually mean by this. How was Snyder's following of the book "too closely" detrimental to the movie? What should he have done differently that would have made it better?

In some instances, he did things differently than the book such as uniting humanity after a bunch of nuclear bombs go off rather than having a fake alien invasion. And I think this change was actually great. IMO, people would have found the alien storyline coming from a little out of the blue. But having a bunch of nuke-like bombs going off seems to for fitting for the story. After all, throughout the entire movie people are worried about mutually assured destruction by use of atomic weapons. To me, this change just seemed to fit better with the story.

Anyone who read the book first should just be amazed that a movie was ever made.

If nothing else, it gave me a new appreciation of 99 Red Balloons.

Hey folks, gotta ask a stupid question. I've never seen the Directors Cut. Is it worth a watch? Better/worse?

I found that it was better because it allowed Snyder to transition between the scenes. The original appeared to be a bit choppy in places. I definitely recommend the Director's Cut.

This. It took balls to make this film.

I don't think that it was detrimental in any way. But there people who criticize him for the slow-mo portions that are tributes to actual panels from the comic. I personally loved them. Not since Sin City did I feel that I was watching a comic book come to life. But some people thought that it was cheesy for Snyder to match panels frame for frame.

Probably my favorite superhero movie. Deserves way more credit than it gets.

Read the graphic novel long before watching the movie and I prefer the movies ending.
