overprescription
people demand an Rx for every sniffle. Eventually the bugs will become resistant.

Antibiotics are terrifying to me. I will try everything under the sun before I give them a green light.

"clean" and "germaphobe" generation of parents that cover their kids in hand sanitizer
My two kids get sick very rarely and we don't have a bottle of hand sanitizer in our house. They share cups, toys that they chew on, food, you name it. We don't purel shopping carts that they sit in, never wash our hands unless there's shite or vomit on them and we generally don't worry about germs.
In two years one of them ran fever once that wasn't from teething.
People don't realize that while being clean is good, being too clean turns your immune system into a giant puss that can't fight anything.

Its this "clean" and "germaphobe" generation of parents that cover their kids in hand sanitizer after they play in the yard and shite like that. NEWSFLASH PARENTS: Germs are good for your kids!

Evolution.
More specifically punctuated equilibrium. Thanks to over prescription, all nearly all livestock animals literally being force fed anti-biotics, humans not finishing their doses, etc. the bacteria that once were susceptible to the effects of penicillin no longer are.
So there you go, real first world problems.

Wtf happened to penicillin?
Combination of overprescription and it not being able to attack gram negative bacteria.

A lot of bacterial infections your body can beat on its own. This is more important for children, as their immune systems need the workout.
Obviously there are exceptions, but this generation of kids is the "z-pack" generation and its going to get ugly.
When I was in college from 2006-2010, the campus health center would give out z-packs for everything. It was borderline malpractice.

i know people who demand z-packs every time they get a cold. they've created a complete placebo effect
it always cracks me up when i have a cold and they're like "man go to urgent care and get a zpac" and i'm just

Can't just blame the docs, NPs and PAs.... You have to take the full run of the meds. Many people quit taking them as soona a they feel better. Part of the reason why the organisms can develop an immunity.
The correct answer

One of the few things that sets me off on a rant on my high horse
I will tell anybody willing to listen that is a terrible fricking idea.

My mom used to bring me in for every cough and get abx. I remember my dad bitching at her for doing that
I hated that awful pink souplike penicillin :gross:
My kids have had them one or two times.
They have been prescribed abx way more than that but I won't give it to them unless I think they really need it. I always go back for the check up and get the all clear tho.
About Three years ago Drs quit handing it out like candy.

Exactly. You need to allow your body to build up a resistance. If you don't establish a baseline early on--you're fricked.

Maybe it's a viral infection and not strep?
Very possible. Also people can have both strep and infectious mononucleosis (viral) at the same time. Penicillin works just fine against the bacteria that causes strep throat.

If you get strep and do not treat it timely with antibiotics there is a chance that you can develop rheumatic fever. It is very rare but very serious. I say this because it happened to me.
I had never had strep before so I was not aware of the danger nor did I have an understanding that what was going on was more than just a bad sore throat.
Rheumatic fever is not joke. I had to do a nuclear stress test afterwards as it has a tendency to damage heart valves. Also, it attacks connective tissues so there were days that I could literally barely move. Mornings when it would take me 20 minutes to be able to stand.
If she starts feeling pain near joints that is a sign. Prednisone (sp?) is the best thing ever to relieve it....its actually the only thing I have ever taken prednisone and could actually tell it was working.
Hope all goes well.
