Is Paris the world's most revered city?

And thus its most sacred?
I ask because I just saw "Diplomacy" on Netflix, an account of General von Choltitz's decision to defy Hitler and not destroy the city.
Sure, there's Rome... but whereas Rome is definitely more an historical treasure its mystique is all about power and world domination and mythology.
Paris is about art and light, and the beauty of people.
I vote Paris.

Vatican City isn't technically a city so I'll go with Mecca

quote:Been there 4 times. I second that. But it's sacred in terms of being a reflection of who we are. Good example of the "fluidity" of thought and art.
I vote Paris.

Never been there, so it's hard to say, but - gun to my head? I'd prolly say Paris.

Sacred implies a center of religion. I guess that depends on your perspective. I don't think of Paris really when I think of religion. Rome and Jerusalem probably have it beat from that perspective. Mecca is synonymous with religious center. What would be it for the eastern world? New Delhi in India? Eta: something in Nepal?

How does this follow?

Revered? yes. Despite what one might think of the French, spending a week in Paris makes you immediately want to live there. It also feels like the height of modern Western civilization. Hemingway and all that jazz. Sacred? No. I reserve that for Vatican City. But there is no where on earth like the city of light. Especially when you're there with your woman.

Id say no. The reputation of Paris is relevatively recent. It's been around for at least 2000 years but id argue that it never really became what we think of it today till the 1800s. Rome has been the center of the western world since 200 BC. Istanbul is a city that is likewise a city that had always been destined for greatness surviving and reinventing itself in each era. I'd even offer Vienna as a rival for Parisian art.

For revered, I'd say: London, Paris, Rome, and NYC in that order. If you actually meant sacred, probably Jerusalem, Mecca and Lhasa based off the world's largest religions.

NYC is the World's City. It is by a long shot the most revered city. Go to Asia, and they probably don't know that much about Paris, but they'll know quite a bit about NYC due to it's exposure in film.

In the Western world, probably, with Rome a close second

Lol.
Wrong again.
Now, it could be the most over-diagnosed city, if by "diagnosed" you meant "occupied".

I'd go with Jerusalem.
Christianity, Judaism , and Islam all hold that ancient city in the highest regard.
