Sir Nicholas Winton, who organised the rescue of 669 children destined for Nazi concentration camps, has died aged 106.
Sir Nicholas, then a stockbroker, arranged for trains to carry Jewish children out of occupied Prague.
The prime minister described him as a "great man" and the chief rabbi praised his "exceptional courage".
He died on the anniversary of the departure of a train in 1939 carrying the largest number of children - 241.
His son-in-law Stephen Watson said he died peacefully in his sleep at Wexham Hospital, Slough.
Sir Nicholas brought the children to Britain, battling bureaucracy at both ends, saving them from almost certain death, and then kept quiet about his exploits for a half-century.
He organised a total of eight trains from Prague, with some other forms of transport also set up from Vienna.

Goddamn hero.
Read about him earlier just after reading an article about the "Accountant of Auschwitz" being on trial.
Winston absolutely wanted no recognition and people didn't know about his exploits until his wife found a scrapbook in 1988 detailing the people and events of 1939.

Talk about a helluva life well-lived. Glad the world got 106 years of this man.

And the best kind of hero at that.

Not so many anymore, at least most of them are unassuming and not attention seekers.

That man will make you feel insignificant no matter who you are.

Hey y'all, I got shite to do, can't watch now.
For those of you that know about this fellow and/or watched the links, I take it he was made a "Sir" long before he started hauling train loads of Heeblets out of Prague?
Just asking because it said he was very humble/not recognized for this for a long time, and was wondering if he got himself potentated for doing this, or was already a Sir.
Either way, and not that it matters mind you. WHAT a helluva man. Can't wait to watch this. As uncomfortable as Schindler's List was to watch, I think it should be required viewing for all kids in high school. To this day, I still consider the Jewish Holocaust the most historically significant event of the 20th century (thus, forgive my "Heeb" joke - it was just that, a joke).

It's fricking insane to think of kids being rounded up for slaughter by a westernized country not long ago
