I sincerely tried to move ITL or just outside to get closer to the med center. THe only thing affordable around $200-$300K was S. Post Oak/Braeswood area, and it flooded two weeks ago really badly.
Wife wasn't having it...to Pearland we go.

You can live in the loop and you might not keep your commute under 30 minutes 
. Depending on your job, you can adjust your work hours by an hour or so, and it's doable to live further out.
I live in The Woodlands and we definitely love it. I looked at Cinco Ranch and in Cypress and The Woodlands was just a lot better for us. It's got everything for families, shopping, dining, and some nightlife all within your area without getting on the interstate. But 35 minutes to downtown is pushing it. It really depends on where you live. IF you are in the very front, then maybe. But it takes me about 15 minutes to get to I45 from where I am. And that's at 6 a.m.. You get used to sitting in your car for an hour. I personally think the extra commute time is totally worth it.

There's reasonably priced stuff there as well. Our house was in the 300k range and would probably have sold for 450k where we were in Louisiana. But if you want to live in the front of The Woodlands where all the entertainment is and be near the water and such, expect to pay some big money. Ton's of places to choose from, but if you want the best location, there's enough cash in the area to jack the prices up quickly. Damn near every private school in the area is near 20k tuition.

Taking Hardy is a must if you are commuting downtown from The Woodlands. I probably wouldn't want to live up there and commute downtown everyday just because I don't like sitting in traffic, but there is zero damn chance I would it if I had to take 45. Hardy is a must

Definitely. There are prices all over the place from $225k on up. My house is 3 years old, so I assume most of the houses around me are as well. 2500-2500 square feet. I'd say it's around $315k to $550k in our neighborhood. But that's for the newest houses in the area. There was a lot in the $300k range. Also a lot of $275k in well established areas that just needed a little bit of updating. We just didn't feel like dealing with it after doing some work on our starter home.

I live in West U and while it would be an easy <30 min commute you're not going to find a lot of land area. I commute sadly down 45 every shift and at rush hour for what should be a 25 min commute, I plan for an hour and usually get there right on time. Rice Village, Heights and around memorial city may be other options though Mem City puts you squarely on 10 which is a CF any time of day

I lived in summerwood for three years and we liked it. Loved the house and neighborhood but the commute is definitely more than 30 to downtown and getting worse. If generation park ever takes off that could make traffic worse. We also did not care for the lack of good restaurants and shopping in the area but as it continues to develop that may improve. I certainly would consider it if I moved back to Houston
My mil also lived in eagle springs and it's very comparable to summerwood. Closer to atascocita but not as convebient to beltway 8

I live in Bridges on Lake Houston, just moved in there from Lakeshore a couple of weeks ago. Both of these just down the road from Summerwood. Have lived in this area for over 8 years now. Depending on what time you leave I can and frequently do make it to downtown in about 30 minutes or so. I work past downtown so I keep on going, but it is very doable. There are 5 new communities in development right now on West Lake Houston Parkway, so plenty of options along with Generation Park going in too. Traffic will likely be very trying in the next couple of years and it will take a while for the city to catch up and put in measures to help traffic. You can buy houses in all price ranges off of WLHP. Anywhere from the mid 100's to over 1 million.

Reading this thread makes me so happy I live in the loop (actually in Houston). All of these planned community suburbs sound like pure evil.
Having said that, Woodlands is by far the best of any and all Houston suburbs.
