Currently live in the Garden Oaks/ Oak Forest area. It's just North of the loop and a neighborhood with character. How it hasn't been mentioned yet is beyond me. I don't think the $200-$300k budget should be a barrier to entry but it might be. They're houses here that are being torn down and the rebuilds are pushing $1 mil but still plenty of properties in your range.
I don't have kids so I don't know about schools but Oak Forest Elementary is a public school that looks the part for sure...

I live in West U and commute downtown. I have caught a 30m + commute more than I can count, during rush hour. It is 20 minutes without traffic from downtown to sugar land, Katy, pearland. Downtown to the beltway is roughly the distance of Oneal lane/Shenandoah to LSU. Inside the loop surface streets can be awful as well.
All that being said, staying close to downtown is absolutely worth it, kids or no kids. You are close to everything for all ages. If you can swing it, I doubt you will regret it.

To those suggesting renting in the city until the wife is prego, that's the plan. Specifically asking about where we should look to settle a little later.
And others asked budget. Right now, the $250k range, but hard to say where we'll be when we're ready to buy. Hopefully closer to $350k.

Trust me, you will hate The Woodlads. There's nothing for you here. I would know having lived here for 20 years and not just saying that because we don't need anyone else moving in to add to the horrendous traffic that has plagued this place the last 5 years

Idk where you are commuting to, but it would take me at least 30 minutes most days to get to work in the loop, and that was living off the beltway.
Traffic will be a daily battle no matter where you live, but my advice is to avoid the southern suburbs. I 45 south is a disaster during rush hour

OP if you live in burbs and you and your wife work 8 hour days your kid is going to spend 50+ hrs a week at daycare
Eta: we would wake up, get kid dressed, drop him off at daycare, pick him up, bath/feed, put him to bed, repeat

I currently live in Summerwood. Nice neighborhood. My daughter just finished middle school and will be attending Summer Creek in the fall.
Check out the Groves along West Lake Houston. Brand new neighborhood with some really nice houses. It's about 5 to 10 minutes from the beltway and whatever direction you want to take into downtown.
If you need a broker, just let me know. I have an inside source that could get you a really good agent for the area!

That should already be off his list. Half of his 30 minute commute would be spent getting out of Sienna to a main road.

That's almost anywhere. Drop them off 30 min before and pick up 30 min after and you are looking at 45 hours a week right there.
I truly enjoy where I live much more than where I lived in LA and my commute used to be 12 minutes. The commute isn't fun, but it isn't as horrible as it seems (granted I'm in O&G and can come and go as a please a little more freely than most). My wife works in The Woodlands just 2 minutes from daycare. Places like The Woodlands have a lot of opportunity for work, so it's not necessary for both to have to work downtown.

Yeah, it has gone up a lot lately. My point was more about justifying living in the loop. It can still take you a long time to get places but all aspects of life are easier. My in-law is a teacher and bought a house in meyerland. The area seemed nice enough and gets to enjoy the same things we do.
With kids - all the downtown museums, miller theater, parks, and the zoo are all 10 minutes away. My job requires me to go around the city so I have seen the traffic and commutes in all directions. There is no good answer to that. Live close to the center and hope you are contraflow to traffic. For I-45, both directions are bad at rush hour.
There is no formula for it since it is personal preference. Land costs more in the city center, so you get less of that but receive more time and ways to spend that time in return. Everyone has their own balance.

I definitely agree that it's worth the commute but housing prices there are 30% more than the other suburbs listed.
