I have a meeting in Orlando and am looking to take the family to the beach in my free time. Any suggestions?

Clearwater
that may be out of range now that I think about it.

that's a little out of range, man. I'd love to go to Clearwater though.

Daytona/Coco Beach, but being the Atlantic, the beaches are ok and the water isn't very clear. Cold, too.
Tampa/St Petes is 2 hours, minimum.

If you absolutely MUST do Daytona, only go to the southern area..Ponce Inlet State Park. The beach with all the driving in Daytona is a racket.

Sebastian Inlet is just a little outside of that time frame

When I was stationed in Orlando, I would head to Cocoa Beach (45mins). Daytona is an hour away but it was too commercialized for my tastes.

The base closed in 1998. When were you stationed there?
Nuclear? Non Nuke-ET?

Mapquest shows it at 1:45...so not to much farther than the 1:30 limit you had. Definitely worth the extra 15 minutes each way. With that being said...you are close enough just to go hit Wekiwa Springs and take a swim there.

Cocoa, New Smyrna, Melbourne are all about an hour depending on where you're staying. I'm not really a fan of Daytona. Clearwater area is worth the longer drive though IMO, fewer shark bites, cleaner beach, warmer water.
Eta - you can definitely be in Clearwater in under two hours

We've been to cocoa beach. Nice, lazy beach and community. If you have time you can also check out the Kennedy Space Center visitor's center while you are there.

Cocoa or New Smyrna Beach. New Smyrna being my preferred choice. Laid back, less developed. Eat at JB's Fish Camp and enjoy the sunset on Mosquito Lagoon.

What? Water is 85 right now. Far from freezing.

What's the parking situation like on Clearwater Beach?

Depends on the day. Weekdays shouldn't be bad. It'll be around 2 hours, though. And DO NOT drive from 7-9 am or 4-6 pm unless you love torturing yourself

Well shite. Meeting in Orlando is at 7 pm. So, I'd be hitting it right at bullshite traffic time.
