What Kind of Difference Would a Player Like Dellavadova Make on the Pelicans?

Having watched basketball since I was a kid, I don't think that you can underestimate these kinds of players. Yet, you rarely see them in the NBA. Rodman was very talented, but he was like this. Did all of the dirty work. These aren't guys that you expect to put up 20 points a night, but they lay their guts on the floor and make things happen.
If the Pelicans had a player like this, they don't lose that huge lead to Golden State in Game 3. They also likely win a few more games that they lost late in games.
Seriously. Why isn't there more of a premium on players like this in the NBA who can come off of the bench and provide a spark. I remember the Pistons back in the day had Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson who would come in and be balls to the wall energy for short spurts. There have been others.
NFL rosters carry guys who are Special Teams aces to come in and do the dirty work. I know that NBA rosters are smaller, but some of the guys on the bench never see any playing time. Why isn't there more of a place for guys with average talent but huge hustle/desire who are willing to throw themselves around and make things happen?
The Pelicans would be better for it, in my opinion.

IMO, he wouldn't have made that much of a difference on the Pels roster this past year. Teams really take on the personality of their coach. I really believe this no matter what the skill level of the player/team. With Monty being the head coach, Dellav. would've feel in line like the rest of the sheep. One of the reasons great coaches stand out above all the rest is b/c they can motivate players like Dellav. to play a notch above what they think they are capable of playing. Under Monty's leadership Dellav. wouldn't have the same impact as a Pel like he's having as a Cav.

That is a good point. I have coached youth basketball for years. I wa a scrapper when I played and was always diving for loose balls and focused on defense and whatever. It was because I was never good enough to be a primary scorer. But, I made myself valuable in other ways. So, I coach my kids to do that and they are always outworking the other team on the 50/50 plays and just through high energy.
So, coaching does play into it.
I guess that I wonder why coaches would not coach this way or want those types of players. I don't mean everyone, of course. I am talking about a guy here and there who will just fight like crazy. Then, you need other guys who are more fluid and who run the floor and have more offensive skill. It just seems like a good mix is the best way to go.
Cleveland is getting hammered with strength right now, and apart from Green, they are too finesse to handle it. It is interesting to watch.

Would be a nice defensive piece in the back court, but he'd be no more than the 4th guard for us. When Monty was coach, Greivis Vasquez was very much that energetic overachieving player for us and it was great. I don't think we have that right now, but I doubt Dellavedova is going to be worth however much a team pays for him. Those guys are best found on your own before you have to pay them.

Yep
There's no room on the roster for him even if the pels were interested.

quote:seriously? little to none. He has two good games in the finals and people are flipping their shite over him. He is what he is: a hard nosed hustling 7th or 8th man. Nothing more nothing less. He will fade back into irrelevancy when it's all said and done.

No. I am not saying that you pay for HIM. I get that his value is situational and would likely not transfer into other settings. I am just wondering about a player LIKE Dellavedova that you could find cheap who could come in and play with that kind of energy. He will come back down to earth and be like Jeremy Lin or something. But, it would have been nice to have a player like that this year, I think.

Cunningham and Norris Cole play the exact role you are describing

Drink spills and injuries to fans would go up.

I guess everyone is on the Dellavedova bandwagon

Norris Cole is a better version of Dellavadova

Did you ever see Dellavadova play at St. Mary's?
He's always played that way.
And Nole and Cunningham bring the same energy and intensity when they are in the game.
Everyone looks better playing on the side of Lebron, except Chris Bosh and Kevin Love.

Gotcha. I think a player like him would have a minimal impact on our team though. Norris Cole and Dante Cunningham are two very similar players, especially Cole. If you look at their regular season numbers, that's what Dellavedova would bring.

He's terrible. The Cavs are absolute garbage. He's just teammates with Lebron. So was Norris Cole.
