I work with about 6 people all from Chicago/Indiana area. Tons in the south

I don't follow hockey and couldn't name a player on either team, but i used to live in Chicago and when it comes to the Stanley Cup i usually "root" for Canadian or original teams over Southern expansion/relocated teams. but basically i don't really care.

Most of Chicago is full of band-wagoners, so I would imagine these Texans are in the same mold.

I disagree.
Cubs fans (of which I am one) are about as committed as they come despite decades of punishment, and the Bears rule this town win or lose. Chicago was a top hockey city before Dollar Bill did everything he could to destroy it.

Since a lot of people in non-hockey places just casually tune into the playoffs or championship, the team with the best-looking jerseys with a passionate fanbase will attract them. And those Blackhawks jerseys are fricking awesome.

I am from the suburbs of Chicago and I hate the hawks. My team is the stars because of Mike Madono in Wayne Gretzky and NHL Hitz.
