re: Is there something wrong with arbitrarily wanting to move to another town?

Those are your choices and you actually have to think about if you want to stay in BR?!! Should be a no brainer...GO FOR IT AND LEAVE BR.
On a serious note...now may be the best time before kids come along. You won't know if another place is a better fit for you unless you give it a try. You may find you love it outside of BR or you may miss BR and realize it's where you truly belong. Worst case...you hate it and move back. And you mentioned you necessarily don't hate BR so that sounds like it wouldn't be horrible to you if you did move back. Good luck

Additionally, I've never heard anyone say "I wish I'd never ventured outside of Baton Rouge."

My first career job out of LSU was in Atlanta. I liked it, but it never felt like home. We came back after the kids were born and they would not be the same people if they had not grown up around grandparents and cousins.
Moving and travelling has helped me appreciate other places, and helped me to see how great my own city is.
Look for a transfer that would help the career, rather than just moving to move.

High taxes. Horrible schools. High insurance rates to pay for those who refuse to carry insurance. The road system is designed to handle the traffic from 30 years ago.
High crime rates. Approximately 2/3-3/4 of the city is unsafe to go to. Inept police force with a total disdain for the citizens. Police are used to write tickets for revenue raising. Political corruption. Degrading neighborhoods and social structure. High fees for any government service.
You know you want to move but have probably not singled out why. There is more elsewhere. There is also less elsewhere.
You have probably spent your whole life around family and some of the many good people of south Louisiana. The family will not be wherever you move. There will be good people but they are different. People in south LA know how to make fun out of nothing.
You may know how to cook Cajun food. Smoked sausage sucks elsewhere. Andouille is a joke if you can find it at all. Snow and bitter cold weather that lasts for months sucks. Rusting cars from salty roads suck.
You will miss friends, family, LSU sports and the mystique of south LA. You, your wife and future children's quality of life will escalate once you get out though.
Rent until you find a great place to buy. Make sure your work, and recreation, are close to where you buy. Do your homework on schools, crime, insurance, taxes, etc. before you buy.
Enjoy.

Anyone of those would be nice to live in or near.

Well unfortunately beggars can't be choosers. If I'm lucky I may have a choice of two or maybe three of those places when it gets down to it, and it will probably be more of a lateral move for me than anything. Still, it wouldn't be bad to have worked at another office for a while just to get a feel for some of the other areas the company works in.

Are you trying to get away from black people?

I think about it every day. BR is a shithole, except for LSU. Do it. There is a big wonderful world out there.
Luckily, I get to travel.
I love Portland Maine and San Diego.

Leaving the place you're born is never a good idea. God put you here for a reason, stick it out.

I really like S. La.
Still open to other places though. I've traveled quite a bit, just never lived anywhere else for more than a couple of months.
