Just pointing out that he did do something besides stepping out of the box doesn't necessarily mean you have to agree with the actions of the umpire up until that point.

Even though he had a point it doesn't mean he shouldn't have been ejected.
Why is this so hard to understand?

kind of technical or personal foul
Sure, but can you think of an instance in any other sport where one technical or personal foul results in an ejection from the game? I can't.
NFL - Pretty much all good unless you touch a ref.
NBA - Don't two technicals equal an ejection unless you do something egregious.
NHL - You can literally beat the crap out of somebody and only get 5 minutes in the box.
Soccer - You may not even get tossed for biting someone on the shoulder.

The ump told him to get in the box. Harper pointed at the box and the ump nodded. Harper proceeded to step into the box. Then got tossed for doing exactly what the ump asked.
lol, no...that is not how it went down

Usually if you instigate the fight in hockey its a game misconduct and gone for the rest of the game.

The umps usually give a warning before tossing someone, like if a batter is hit, each dugout is warned, then ejections. When arguing with an ump, I'm sure early on in the exchange he lets you know you should knock it off.

Haven't seen a whole lot of real hockey games have you?

Unless you say the magic words. Baseball is the only sport (maybe soccer at times) that arguing with an official is tolerated though.

Lol wut? No.

Yes. If you get an instigation you get game misconduct. You also get a game for deliberately trying to injure and multiple stick infractions.

There were about 27 instigating penalties last year in the whole league.
There is nothing "usually" about that

You can kick dirt on umpires too. Harper should have kicked dirt on that stupid ump after he got tossed.

but if you can't see it was a "ok, mr ump, here you go.......I'm in the box, there's my toe, I'm in the box", then I can't help you.
This is what I am talking about as far as Harper being a punk........

It's like it's own side game like fighting in hockey. It's almost like a show that both the manager and the ump do for the crowd. A voluntarily uncoordinated event of some kind

Fighting has a purpose in hockey, just fyi.
Baseball decides that throwing 100 MPH heat at someone's head is a better way to do it.
And sometimes, yes managers do put on a show ususally for their own team to show they have their back, but also to get that player out of the limelight/trouble. They (the manager) and the fans would much rather have the manager thrown out than the star player, which is the entire point for many in this thread.
But this wasn't a dog and pony show between manager and umpire, Williams was legit pissed that this a-hole ump threw out his star for no apparent reason.

How does this exculpate the ump from escalating the situation and not doing his job like he should?
So umps can be arbitrary so long as they offer a warning?

Williams should have been tossed for arguing balls and strikes though before Harper got tossed.
Harper deserved to get tossed for showing up the ump and probably said the magic words somewhere.
The umpire blew it by not tossing Williams earlier and letting it go that far. If Williams gets tossed Harper probably doesn't get tossed.

How did he escalate it? He told Harper to get back into the box. Or are you talking about Williams and suggesting he should ignore a manager yelling at him?

Absolutely, that's a rule I have no problem with.

This is the part of the issue with baseball as many in here have said. The ump grandstanded with his manager, he steps out of the box and all the sudden the ump flips his attention back on Harper and that's showing the umpire up? Get the frick out with that.

No question. And that's the point of many in this thread.

Harper was back in the box ready to go and the umpire took his mask off and started yelling at the dugout. That was escalation. He had no intention of running the skipper at that point so why did he stop the game and react the way he did? If he immediately ran Williams after taking his mask off, the whole issue is done. Williams would have run out and thrown his tantrum and that would have been that.
