Is the Marvel Cinematic Universe Too Big?

Don't get me wrong. I like that the world is complex. I like they don't feel the need to retell the origins anymore, but has it gotten a little too big?
I took my nephew to see Avengers today, and I found I couldn't just lean back and enjoy the movie. I was trying to remember all the little subplots and interpret all the references to previous movies and television shows. It kind of ruined the movie for me a little bit.
I think that's why I liked Guardians so much -- and others did too. It's a Marvel movie, but didn't involve any of the previous titles in anything more than a minor way. That allows you to just enjoy the movie.

Im not burned out, im just hoping for something different. GOG was sucessful because it was just different enough.

Civil War is supposed to have about 20 characters in it, that's a bit ridiculous IMO.

By 2019, Robert Downey, Jr. will have played Iron Man in 8 movies. Think about that. 8 movies. I love RDJ and I love the character, but at some point, there are so many movies that it is hard to keep up with it all or to care.

Way too oversaturated. I don't know what's more saturated: the superhero genre or the Liam Neeson "I'm gonna get revenge on you and everybody you know" genre.

a lot of people are, however, these films continue to make a killing at the box office so they're not going anywhere.

No.
Next question.

I'm not burned out. I still love the genre, and Marvel does a fantastic job of translating from page to screen, but the MCU is wearing me down.
It's the same reason I quit reading guys like Martin, Erickson and Jordan. There's just too much to remember. I don't want to take notes during a movie.
Side note: So I think Panther will be introduced via a failed assassination attempt of Banner in retribution for him destroying the city and killing those people in Wakanda.
Side note 2: How many people died in this movie. Minimum several thousand, right?

When I was a youngun reading comic books I thought the premise of Guardian was so stupid I never read it and even present day almost didn't see the movie, but I completely loved it.

Some people are burned out I guess.
I am absolutely not at all though. I love them. They are the only movies I actually go to the movie for anymore.

People have waited 2-3 generations for comic book movies to be mainstream and getting the respect it deserves and now thanks to improved movie making technology, it's finally here.
If you don't like it, don't see them.

I never said I didn't enjoy the movies. In fact, I said I love the genre and Marvel does a brilliant job translating page to screen.
My hangup is that watching a movie is becoming a bit difficult because of the intricacy of the Universe. By the time Inhumans rolls around, there will be 22 intertwined films and at LEAST three TV shows that must be watched to full enjoy a movie. That's like a fricking job. I love what Marvel has done, but I want some standalone stuff that just a fun movie.

I think it's much more than that.
It's that none of the movies outside of Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, the Avengers and Iron Man really did anything to move the story forward. They feel like just fan service and don't take any risks.

So the simple answer is the MCU verison of this...
which can be done very similar to what Marvel does now in their comics line.
The MCU isn't close to being big enough....so many more corners to fill in...especially after Fox and Marvel make-up.

For the last time, THAT WAS JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, not Wakanda.
1. Wakanda is in East Africa.
2. Wakanda is by far the most technologically advanced nation in Marvel's Earth.

That's how I feel about comic books.
The films, at least right now, are much easier to get into as a new fan. It's part of the reason why I love the Marvel movies so much. They provide a starting point that will naturally become more complex as time goes on.

Sounds like you just have a poor memory. I had no trouble following the latest Avengers. Nor have I had difficulty following Song of Ice and Fire or Wheel of Time.
I love that all of the Marvel movies are connected. As long they continue to make good movies, I don't see how you can get burned out on it. I will watch every single movie Marvel puts out from now until the end of time.
