The folks that I meet that don't like the common core math are also bad in math.
just my experience.

Why is long addition and subtraction no longer taught?
Probably because there is a calculator in our phones, watches, etc.

Wellll....I've posted before in these ignorant threads, my wife teaches elementary math..I also have three children in the school system...
Our issues with Common Core is the political side of it..The material itself, should push your child to do things different..
In the South though, we were taught that different is wrong, and that 2+2 is the only way to get to 4

Interesting side note: Massachusetts was one of the first states to adopt Common Core, and if the state was a country, it would rank 9th in the world in terms of education.
I honestly don't have strong feelings either way on Common Core, but I thought that was an interesting fact.

What surprised me is that her children are quite smart. The real shock was hearing this from someone with an Obama sticker on her suburban.

Guys yall are so funny :/ I was 16 taking calculus at lsu. I've won numerous math competitions and rallies back in the day. Turned down Ivy league scholarships....
Geez I promise if I post his scores yall won't feel so great about your kids scores. Can we not turn this thread into a pissing contest?
Home school? I'm a business owner. Nice try.

Unfortunately, Common Core is going to be the future until the next decade when a different administration tries something else.
The ACT/SAT is switching to the Common Core model, and that will force the private schools to implement a lot of it, just so their students can do well on the college admission tests.
You can take my advice or leave it, but if your child is at the top of his/her class, then supplement his/her learning with enrichment activities. Many colleges have summer camps for advanced kids. Our daughter would spend two weeks at Vanderbilt every summer before coming back to her public school. Duke also has a great program, but I don't think they take elementary age kids like Vandy does.
Don't buy into the soccer mom "bored at school" mantra either. Its horse shite. So is "My kid doesn't take standardized tests well," for that matter.

I'm about at the end of my patience with this common core mess, do I have a local alternative?
Your only alternative at the grade school level will be to pay for private school or see if your ids qualify for gifted. When they reach High school (to answer another poster's question), if they can get in, AP classes and gifted have their own teaching methods to reach the same standards.
Getting them into gifted is a process that takes time due to the evaluation process. If you believe that your kids are gifted, start making noise now at school.

Is your kid at a public school?

There is no gifted program in my parish. I'd literally have to move

That's sad. There's a school district in our area that is getting rid of theirs (as well as AP classes) in the name of fairness. We need to start teaching kids that there are winners and losers in life.

So yes?
If you don't like the style of education that your child is receiving at a school that you don't pay a tuition check to, then start cutting checks and send him/her to somewhere that fits your style.

If your child is gifted, your school system MUST provide them with Special education services. Gifted is covered by Special Education Laws. Either they just do not have any gifted kids where you live or they are breaking the law.

Option (3) "I heard that..."
Probably the most likely in these scenarios..

You're right. You said that many times in this thread so we all should have known.
Oh wait, you never once mentioned it and I'm not fricking clairvoyant. You asked what you could do, and an answer was given.
