American Idol Ending after 15th Season (next season)

This show had been on the decline for many years now. I'm surprised they lasted after that disaster of a season with Mariah Carey and Nicki Manaj as judges.

American Idol will finally come to a close next year at the conclusion of its 15th season. The music reality show was once a cultural phenomenon that was consistently the most-watched entertainment show on television in the US. That streak continued for a good nine years, according to the Associated Press, but over the last several years its popularity has dropped precipitously, falling from a series high of 30.8 million viewers per episode in 2006 to a viewership of around 6.5 million viewers, like it saw just one month ago. It's also no secret that the show's cultural power hasn't been quite the same for well over a decade — it's been a long time since Kelly Clarkson broke out during the show's first season, in 2002. The show's decline has been credited, in part, to competition from other music reality shows, like The Voice.

Finally. Maybe this is the start of reality tv seeing its end. We can only hope.
The odd thing is that this
Should be enough to run a show that MUST be cheap to produce. You aren't paying any of that talent onscreen (excluding judges of course).

That show should have died when they chose Ellen degeneres to be a judge.

Well this isnt true. Underwood was after Clarkson. As was Daughtrey, Phil Phillips, Hudson, Mcphee, Sparks, etc. I mean that show has produced Platinum artists, Oscars, Grammys, stars of network tv shows, the voice of an olympics.
Thats the problem with the Voice. No stars.

The last few seasons were really forced. They kept trying to steer the audience away from choosing the typical "white guy with a guitar."
My wife gave up midway through last season, and refused to watch the latest season.
The show has had some nice talent, but the live format was horrible.

Like Mayweather vs Pacquiao, 5 years too late.

That's what I thought until Harry said otherwise when he got mad at Quentin a few weeks ago. He told him AI was paying him a lot of money to be there. I don't know when they start paying them, though. Might go up the longer they stay. Top 10 used to go on tour. This year only the top 5 make the tour and, last year, I believe, they had to cancel some shows.
AI has had more successes than The Voice by a lot and what's interesting about that is some of the contestants on The Voice have had records and albums released. Some have been backup singers for well known performers...
I'm not a big reality show person, but I don't think of AI and The Voice in the same reality show class as The Kardashians, which I don't watch. The Kardashians isn't reality. It's taped and they refilm scenes when they don't like them. The other two shows go live eventually and there's no redoing of anything other than the few seconds delay in case someone curses or I guess shows a boob. I look at those shows as live entertainment. I like AI better, but it definitely hasn't lived up to it's past with talent or the way they did the show. I'll miss Harry. Really enjoy watching him.

I can only imagine what they paid the judges. And the cost of moving them around from city to city in the early rounds. You know J.Lo ain't staying at the airport Ramada Inn in Houston.
My wife used to watch the show, but she quit during the Phillip Phillips season. I think one of the problems was that the only people who voted were young girls, so it was too skewed toward non-threatening white guys, like Phillip Phillips and that country dude who sang like he was just recovering from a stroke.

Scottie McCreery? He's on tour and is playing on the Rascal Flats tour, also, apparently. The country folk liked him.

Good for him. I thought that guy sucked. Matter of fact, I remember an entertainment website said his winning was a bad sign, because the guy had limited mainstream appeal. He sang out of the side of his mouth like he was recovering from a stroke and he held the mic like it was his boyfriend's pecker.
Of course, what do I know? American Idol sure as shite wasn't made for me.

You wanted him to hold your pecker huh? Admit it.

Never was the same after Simon left. Randy leaving just cemented it. Those guys used to tell it like it was - good or bad, and we got better performers (well, more entertainment) because of it.
The production changed too. they had a great formula - they just screwed with it too much. It was unwatchable to me the last few years.

Definitely not the same after Simon left. I was surprised that it lasted this long after his departure, though I think Harry improved what had been awful. He's not quite as direct as Simon, but he's better than anyone else has been since by a lot.
Randy leaving wasn't a loss at that point. He'd softened up. What sent it spiraling or should have was the Nikki/Mariah debacle. What a train wreck. I think AI thought those two's hate for one another would get more viewers. I nearly quit watching that season. I ff'd through a lot of it that season. I don't ever want to see either of those two doing anything again, separate or together.

Should've shut it down on Simons last season.
