I currently keep a .45 in my truck, .380 and 20 ga in the house. I'm looking to purchase another firearm. Considering a Judge for the house as well. Thoughts.

i keep a 12ga by the bed with turkey loads. Easier to hit someone entering my house.

That 20 gauge with buckshot would serve you very well in your home. It's also got less recoil than a 12 so your wife could use it too.
My home defense weapon is my AR15. If you go this route be sure to load it with low-penetration varmint ammo. You don't want to be putting 5.56 hardball through the walls.

I already have a 20 ga pump that I keep in my closet. That's upstairs. The .380 is in my nightstand. I need something to keep downstairs.

Something that I can keep hidden and easy to access but effective. That's why I'm leaning towards the judge.

Unless you have huge rooms, birdshot will do just as much damage.
OP, if you have others living in your house, a shotgun is where it's at. Most rifles or pistol rounds will go thru several walls, if not your entire house.

A full size 9mm all steel pistol with high capacity mags serves this purpose well and doubles as a cheap-to-shoot range gun.

My 20 gauge pump kicks harder than my 12 gauge semi with standard loads.

The semi spreads the felt recoil out over time
The things that dictate the felt recoil are the weight of the firearm, the speed of the ejection, and the weight of the shell
If all were equal, the recoil of a 12 and a 20 would be the same.

......... a shotgun is where it's at. Most rifles or pistol rounds will go thru several walls, if not your entire house.
For shotguns, use buckshot.
For AR's use fast 5.56 FMJ ammo or something like Corbon DPX.
For handguns use good hollowpoint ammo (like HST, Ranger-T or DPX).
Then hit your target.
Know what's on the other side of walls in case you miss, but don't substitute unsuitable projectiles for proven performers ..... even if somebody on an internet forum said you should.
p.s. And don't look for home defense advice on internet fora.
Just my $.02 worth

I can vouch that a 9mm will go thru a door, a persons leg, a wall, cabinets and out of the exterior wall of a mobile home.

Pretty sure if a person was shot even with low brass birdshot, at 25' feet, they'd be toast. In a home invasion, you normally wouldn't be shooting any further. But, I'm not an expert, just a hunter.

Best home defense guns:
#1. 12 gauge shotgun, followed very closely by the 20 gauge. Most self defense experts recommend buckshot over birdshot. There's lots of debate re: the best type of buckshot. Generally speaking, a 20 gauge will recoil less than a 12 gauge. In addition, a youth model 20 gauge may be much easier for people of smaller stature to handle well compared to a full size 12.
#2 Rifle/carbines, e.g. the 223 Rem, 30-30 rifle and a number of pistol rounds in rifles (e.g. 357 Mag/9mm/40 S&W/45 ACP carbines. Although always a concern, overpenetration is more of a concern w/ rifles. You'll need to do research to be sure you get a load that's a good self defense round w/o excessive penetration. If you want something different, how about a "Golden Boy" lever action in 357 Mag?
#3 Handguns chambered in 9mm, 357 Sig, 357 Mag, 40 S&W or 45 ACP. We can quibble (and we've been known to do that a lot in the past) about the relative merits of each round, but all of the above handgun rounds are adequate using appropriate ammo.
A lot don't agree w/ me (and that's ok since I don't agree w/ them at times
), but I'm not a fan of the Judge. IfI someone has access to the data and wants to share it, I'll reconsider, but to this date, no one's shown me data indicating that a 410 pistol shot shell is an adequate self defense. I don't see the reason to use an unproven self defense round when there are already a lot of proven rounds available. And no. as far as self defense rounds go, I'm not impressed w/ videos of watermelons that explode when shot by the Judge; I also don't think that just because I don't want to get shot w/ a Judge makes it an adeqeuate self defense gun.
If you want a revolver, get one chambered in 357.

Is a 410 shot gun shell to the face not adequate enough for you?
