Taurus Judge and Lehigh defense maximum expansion or Hornady triple defense, pretty hard to beat!

Judge is typically the go to for folks new to firearms with little knowledge. Great marketing behind the gun, so you can't blame the thought process. Truly, the judge/governor is a good camp/pack pistol or hunting side arm to dispatch snakes. It doesn't shine anywhere and there are literaly a hundred better options for home/personal defense.

For this purpose, no doubt a full sized polymer 9mm. Most economical round, most firepower, proven firearms for every manufacturer, less recoil for better follow up shots, your wife shouldnt be intimidated to shoot it like Im sure she is with the .380, good price point firearms, etc. I would honestly put the .380 in the truck, the .45 in the nightstand (assuming a 1911?) and the 9mm in the kitchen over the fridge in a barometric safe. Only problem with over the fridge is there's a chance your wife wont be able to reach it so perhaps on bottom shelf of coffee table out of sight or on a foyer table behind a flower pot.

I dont know, I think it's very easy to have WAYYYYYY better performance than what a judge can give you. The .45 long colt ammo you mentioned has 369 ft/lbs of kinetic energy at muzzle and you only get six rounds (5?) in a judge and it's $42 a box for 12 rounds. Compare that to Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P 9mm at 364 ft/lbs of kinetic energy at muzzle with 17 rounds mag capacity out of a Glock 17 (incredible firepower) and approx $23 for a box of 20 rounds.

.40 In the truck not .45. I mistyped. But yeah I see what you're saying. I was planning on putting whatever I buy on top shelf of entertainment center in living room. I may move the shotgun to a downstairs closet top shelf.

I'm going to look at a 9 mm today.

Top of entertainment center is a great idea, especially if you have some inverted trim moulding around the perimeter. Im sure you already know all the top dogs as far as 9mm polymers go but...

H&K VP9 (striker fired offering from them)
Walther PPQ M2
Glock 17 & 19
Springfield XDM
S&W M&P
Ruger SR9

and I know alot of guys on here are big fans of the CZ 75 as a steel framed gun as well as the Sig P226.

This ^^^^

And +1 to TigerOnTheHill's comments -- he's rarely (if ever) off the mark.

In today's world, it's not uncommon for assailants (home invasions, car jackers, muggers) to be on heavy-duty drugs, or be in urgent need of more heavy-duty drugs, or be mentally ill.

And it's easy for us to project our mental outlook onto these people. Most (if not all) of us would run if someone pointed a Judge, or a .22 pistol, or even a BB pistol at us. But many (too many) of these thugs won't stop until they've been rendered physically incapable of continuing their mission.

One approach is to think about which handgun, and which long gun, you'd want if a pitbull were to attack you or one of your kids. Then have one of those two guns handy all the time - 'cause a thug on bath salts might be a bigger threat than a pitbull.

Just my $.02 worth.

I'm glad you finally took some advice because you came on here acting like you already knew the answer.

Listen to other people and then form an opinion. If you already have one then don't ask at all.

The Judge is not an ideal self defense gun. Simple as that. It does a few things OK but does nothing in particular effectively. The rifled barrel causes any sort of shotshell to expand very quickly. There are some specific defensive rounds for it but then it becomes a question of ergonomics and weight with the pistol. When using an effective, long shotshell, the gun is insanely long and heavy. When using 45 Colt, the cylinder is so long that lots of pressure is lost when the bullet has to pass through the air before contacting the rifling. This is also very detrimental to accuracy.

I completely agree that a polymer 9mm is versatile and effective. If you want a handgun for home defense it's hard to beat 15-17 9mm hollowpoints at your disposal.

12 Gauge in the closet with some buckshot in it, and 5 more on an ammo belt around the stock.

40 cal XD-SC in the truck.

Old Taurus .38 special tucked away out of the reach of little ones. Yeah I know, Taurus, but it has never failed through thousands of rounds and was a gift to my wife from her father. I should probably sell it, buy a tank of gas with what I can get for it, and buy her a Ladysmith instead, but it is what it is.

Vice President Biden suggest a double barrel shotgun with birdshot. Apparently all you need to do is shoot it into the air to scare off even the most heinous and violent criminals.

I guess I should specify that almost unanimously (there are always those little exceptions right?) you should always choose an expanding round of some kind.

I've heard that the even though the military is not locked into Hague Convention (since we didn't sign it) that they use hardball because a wounded enemy soldier is better than a dead enemy soldier. I'm sure there are some other big reasons but I've read that's one, whether it's true or not.

I know they're moving to "open-tipped match" ammo in certain areas. It's basically a hollow point without being called one. Nice work military!

I hope it has a stock on it. If not, #4 buck with that thing will break your face when it recoils.

I never suggest a breeching shotgun to anyone. That's what a shotgun without a stock is truly for.

I read that in my older brother's Marine Corps handbook many moons ago. Apparently it requires the enemy to use up many more of their resources and personnel to care for the injured versus the dead. But this was against a conventional army, not the vermin we're fighting today. I doubt that terrorists give a frick about their wounded and I'm pretty sure we want to kill them, not just wound them.

LOTS of robberies/shootings in an area I used to live in KY. The entire town was that way, enough to where several docs and nurses carried inside the ER I worked. Neighbor that lived 20ft from my apt door was arrested after SWAT kicked in his door for a double homicide that happened 30min after I seen him outside. Another guy was shot downstairs from my apt 3 months later. Thats just a few of the stories..... Call it paranoid, I call it prepared. And yea Bap, its still got the stock on it, its the business end of it they need to be worried about
