I use Hotwire quite a bit and have been pretty pleased. Recently got a 4-star in DC area for $89. Reviews are usually pretty reliable.

The 3rd party booking sites are helpful when you're looking for rates and availability, but I'd book directly with the hotel you end up choosing. Call them and ask for the lowest rate. I've heard horror stories about disappearing reservations/refunds/etc when booking through the 3rd party sites like hotels.com. Also, be careful with the cheapest rates as many of them aren't cancelable. Pay a few dollars more to have the ability to cancel.

I use Travelocity as a base. I then go to the websites of the hotels that I'm interested in. Sometimes you will find a deal booking directly with the hotel. I have a trip to NYC booked for July and saved big doing this. Also have the option of canceling 48 hours ahead with no penalty which gives you the ability to keep shopping.
ETA: I book all air and about 90% of hotel with Travelocity. I also use the reviews on tripadvisor and such heavily, even for the national brands.

thats the way to do it.
normally the rates are SUPPOSED to match, but even so -- the hotel is going to prefer the folks booking direct with them, as they arent paying 15-25% on the back end to some website. you pay the same but the hotel gets a lot more of that rate from direct bookings.
also, if anything does happen, its a lot easier to have a single point of contact instead of having to get the 3rd party AND hotel all on the same page for changes, cancels, if a refund is owed due to some issue, etc....
if you are feeling ballsy, you can call the hotel and ask for a discount off the rate online, and tell them you would book with them instead of expedia/travelocity/wherever. That would be hit or miss though and most random reservations agents of front desk people wouldnt understand.

what runforrestrun said. use the booking sites for rates and availability. book directly through the hotel, the rates will be basically the same as the "discount" sites

I look at TripAdvisor and Travelocity. They cover everything

I am a fan of hotels.com, but they are all about the same.

If anyone is looking for a 1 nighter somewhere, expedia has something on the front page of their website, where if you sign up for their mobile app then you get 25 off of a booking.

I assumed everyone here was normal and used Kayak

Never have run into that, and I've booked tons of nights on hotels.com, priceline, and hotwire. I rarely book hotel rooms directly.

IIRC, TripAdvisor searches all of the bargain websites, including kayak

Blind booking sites FTW. I do it through Hotwire or Priceline.
You don't know what hotel you'll get, but reviews and star levels and areas are easy to interpret.
You get hotels for much cheaper than the regular prices on Priceline, Hotwire, Hotels.com, Expedia, Kayak, etc.
It is like gambling.
I've done Le Pavillon for $60, Mariott downtown for $60, Residence Inn (which is like an apartment) for $50, etc.

1. Go to biddingfortravel.com
2. Find the city you want to go to.
3. Look at the hotel lists and determine if you are okay with the set.
4. Look at what winning bids are going.
5. Click on the Priceline link and bid 5% below to 5% above the lowest winning bid you find.
6. Save hundreds.
