If I Was La'el Collins...

I'd be happy no team drafted me, or offered me an undrafted free agent contract. It makes is easy to sue the NFL for anti-trust and/or RICO violations opening the possibility of triple damages. (Note: the NFL has lost anti-trust lawsuits in the past, most applicable to Collins the suit by the USFL)
The NFL as an entity is a collection of 32 separate businesses cooperating for mutual economic benefit that includes preventing competition. Thus, the NFL is an extension of all 32 franchises, and any information shared by the NFL with more than one franchise opens them to charges of collusion. Thus, if the NFL investigated me, and shared the results of the information with the franchises, and that information resulted in economic damage to me, then there is a good case to be made they colluded and damaged me.
I think it would be easy to prove that NFL made inquiries to the Baton Rouge Police Department, and that it shared that information with the various franchises. If I can show that the NFL shared concerns over the public relations aspect of drafting me, or offering me an undrafted free agent contract, before someone else is arrested for the murder or I am cleared, then I think the case is won. And I think in light of the Aaron Hernandez, Ray Rice, Gregg Hardy and other cases involving player violence that have embarrassed the NFL there is an almost certainty that the NFL and franchises have communicated on how to deal with existing, and prospective, cases involving players accused of violent crimes.

How often the NFL successfully sued?

Probably should know the facts before posting Jerry
Teams had inquired about drafting Collins as early as the fourth round but his agent continued to inform teams he wouldn't sign
If I'm a GM and you are already a risk, why am I going to waste my time picking you if you tell me you aren't signing?
Sorry that you wasted time on that post

Drafting a player is a voluntary act. All a team has to say is "He didn't fit in our plans" and that is pretty much it. Proving that the shared info from BRPD correlates to not drafting him would require someone from a team admitting that happened. Good luck with that

I can totally envision a scenario where Collins told the league "don't draft me" then he successfully sues because no one drafted him.

I doubt he'd have much of a case. Even if a team openly admits they didn't want to risk a high draft pick with the investigation pending, that's perfectly within their rights.
The only case he would potentially have would be if the legal issues are resolved and they don't let him into the supplemental draft.

He has no case they aren't denying him a chance to make a living.

Huh?
He's not eligible for the supplemental draft. He applied for the NFL Draft then told teams not to draft him. He has no argument nor does he have eligibility remaining

that cost the NFL a whopping $3

As much as I wish he could, he's not successfully suing anyone. His best bet is to put this behind him asap and get to work on his first contract

Goofdell can make an exception. He has a long history of making up the rules as he goes along.
In this case, there are special circumstances (a prospect was under suspicion for a crime, which at that time we would know he didn't commit). That suspicion kept him from being drafted. They can and should let him enter the supplemental draft. Teams who think he's worth a first or second round pick can then take him where he should have been chosen.

He's just going to sign this week and be done with it

He announced via his agent to every insider to NOT draft him. Dude stands no chance. And in that situation, he basically ends his own career because he would never play in the NFL again. He is better off flying low on the radar, signing with a team, excelling and then getting the big contract later. Move on with your life. Being dramatic will just make it worse.

The owners and players association have to change this not Goodell. I don't get why people think Roger makes the rules? He just enforces them. This is collective bargained, this isn't changing. Collins played chicken and lost.
