re: Riots In the South? Could it happen?

New Orleans has seen riots many times. We've seen quite a bit of violence in Memphis recently. The reason riots in the south have rarely gotten out of hand, like we see in Baltimore, is our lax gun laws. In Baltimore, the rioters knew that once the police "gave them space", they could essentially rape, pillage, and burn at will due to the fact that Maryland's strict gun control laws ensured local business owners and citizens were unarmed. In Louisiana, that certainly would not be the case.
gun laws in missouri are pretty lax. So your point isn't solid.

They aren't going to do shite down here. Shreveport police killed a kid with a cell phone and said they thought it was a gun a few years ago.
Team sweep it under the rug took care of the rest.

Not a cop shooting and several things have happened to really harm race relations in the US since July 2013 ie ferguson, and choked out man in NYC (name escapes me). If a cop shot an unarmed black man in N.O. right now and there was video of it, it is not unreasonable to think it could happen. Not just in NO either. Shreveport, BR, Jackson or any other southern city could say the same. I certainly hope it doesn't as it would not be like what we see in Baltimore imo.

I don't see how running a short-side option would have solved any of that.

I think blacks in the south also know that the general populace is much more armed and triggerhappy than our northern brethren and would give some pause.
Blacks ARE the general populace in the South.

You run out of room before the narrative gets going... duh.

Atlanta has a black middle class that is totally unlike the rest of the country. I think that complicates things. We have plenty of aggrieved black folks who could create disorder, but you're not going to have fires burning around the city absent total civil unrest.

Jackson, MS could get bad fast in a situation like this one for a number of reasons, including but not limited to, high poverty in minority communities, large and poor minority community (nearly 80% black), the police force is pretty horrible (it is also roughly 80% black), the leadership in the town from mayor to city council is horrible, etc.
What could make Jackson's situation really bad is that one of the last remaining areas in which white people live is the Belhaven/Fondren area of town. this borders the worst areas of Jackson.
Those areas are made up of young hipsters, young professionals and old people. They could be engulfed by riots with relative quickness.

NOPD handles crowds better than most.
NOPD shoots unarmed citizens with a fair amount of frequency.
No riots re said shootings in the last 40 years or so.

I could see this happening in Montgomery, the PD down there would handle it pretty quickly though.

The rest of the country could learn how to handle large crowds from the NOPD.

South ain't a bunch of pussies like dem northern states.

It wouldn't happen in North BR. If it was attempted BRPD would shut it down quickly. They aren't scared to get their hands dirty.

Don't underestimate how well blacks and whites get along here in New Orleans. The small number of protestors here during the recent nationalization effort of the New York riots were mostly professional agitators from out of town. They marched peacefully. The cops watched them and even cleared the path for them, and the local populace watched from an amused distance.
Most black people here are just as pissed at the minority of violent black kids who are murdering everybody as are the white folks.

There is a lot of racial tension in Atlanta, but a lot of it is on a higher level. It's between the Braves and the city, or white and black middle class drivers on the interstate or at the airport. I'm sure there is tension between APD and black folks, but you don't see it in the heart of the city.
The most vulnerable areas for riots would be south of the Peachtree Center area, IMO. You could obviously do a lot of damage to things like the government complex and GSU, but I don't think riots are sustainable above that line. Even in minority areas you don't want to live in in other parts of the metro (think Paulding/West Cobb, Gwinnett, Henry, North Fayette, etc.), I don't think it'd happen because those are still fairly middle class black areas, primarily.

They could definitely flare up in these areas. I would suggest not straying too far out of the immediate urban center of each though. You get to the burbs or, God forbid, out in the country and things would turn bad for them quickly.
As for here in Birmingham, I don't really see it happening again unless something really went wrong (on a national scale.)
