40 day Snapper Season! But

You have to be on a charter to fish...... What's that, you own a large boat, OK cool, you can fish for snapper about 9 day this year in it. But what's that, you want to catch more snapper, thats not a problem, just pay a charter captain $400 and you can.
THis really grinds my gears....
Sorry for the rant, i just watched this video of this guy explaining snapper season and amendment 40 and it pissed me off.
They also said there is a cap on any new charter boats (in ALAMABA at least....
thanks Obama for the American Dream. Thats like saying you can't open up any more bars because all the hot girls (snapper) are being picked up in them to fast. But you are welcome to go to the Local whore house and do as you will.

its the Red snapper report video. (its long but informative)

One of the reasons I sold my offshore boat.

Lol, now the recreational fisherman can be mad at the commercial and charter guys.

"IF" the charter boat captain has a reef permit..

Plenty of places to catch red snapper within the 10mi state limit. Very few fed game wardens out there.
One day maybe I'll pay a fine. But I'm probably just going to take my chances.

yup.
Crazy fact...offshore fishing (+3 miles out) accounts for a very small amount of recreational trips in Louisiana

Its the 3 mile/ 10 mile thing that will get you. But like many have said, State season is nmy new Federal season and i will take my chances getting ticketed.
I just cant get over the fact that the general public can't catch, yet the general public can get on a paid trip and catch.

Bbbbbbbbbb but CCA doesn't do anything for anglers.
From their email:
quote:
Coastal Conservation Association announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against implementation of Amendment 40 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico. Also known as “sector separation,” the amendment is a highly controversial management plan for red snapper that takes a significant percentage of the recreational quota and reserves it solely for use by the charter/for-hire industry.
“Amendment 40 embodies everything that is wrong with federal management of our marine resources. It is completely out of step with this nation’s heritage of wildlife resource management,” said Bill Bird, chairman of CCA’s National Government Relations Committee. “It has been overwhelmingly opposed at every step in the process, but a very small minority has been allowed to manipulate the system to their personal advantage.”
Amendment 40 is widely regarded as the first step to a catch share program for a privileged few in the charter/for-hire industry, similar to the one in place for the commercial red snapper industry. With passage of this amendment, the way is cleared for up to 70 percent of the entire Gulf red snapper fishery to be privately held, while recreational anglers who fish on their own boats will find their access to federal waters severely limited.

When will we know the length of the federal season?

Probably not till the day before it opens with these asshats in charge. I am sure they are hoping to be sneaky with the season info so even less people participate. I read an NMMA article that stated 95% of boats owned in the US are under 26'. IF you take out all the large pontoon boats etc that are in that 26+ class you really have a very small percentage of fisherman targeting the species. Given the uncertainty of weather and the fact that there will most likely only be one weekend included in the season you will have very very few people fishing the federal season. There is no way possible that recreational fisherman can come anywhere near the catch numbers they will claim.
Time to hoist the jolly roger and give a big to these clowns. Once back inside the sate line they are legal.....

Let's be realistic here. CCA is only doing this because their big money supporters also own offshore boats. Personally I would rather see them focus on, oh I don't know, COASTAL conservation perhaps? We have a lot of bad shite going on in the interior marsh but CCA refuses to get involved.
