It's the most effective way of controlling the feral cat population. If you capture and/or kill them, another one shows up to replace it.
Now the preferred means of population control is to catch them, vaccinate them, spay or neuter, and release them back into their territory. They control their turf and don't reproduce. The chipped ear makes them easily recognizable as part of that program.
