How is Person credited with the win yesterday when he only threw 3 innings?

Are college rules different than MLB regarding this?

Because it was determined before the game that LSU was going to throw multiple pitchers for only a few innings each.

yeah, starter doesn't have to throw 5 to get a W in college ball.

The win was predetermined

Coach can designate the starter for the win, (assumming they win), if they know before the game he will not pitch the normal required 5 innings...

Normal rules (in college and pro) state that the starting pitcher must go 5 innings to get the win, however, if the coaches and official get together they can allow the win to a starter going less than 5 innings. This would mostly happen if you were pitching a lot of guys just a couple innings a piece.

I just looked at the box score and my first thought was how he was credited with the win
Thanks for the info

The win designation rule is easily the worst in stat in baseball. The winner should be the pitcher of record when the winning team takes the lead for the final time regardless of whether he started or how many outs he recorded.

It was 6-0 when he left the game. CPM said before the game that he would go 2 or 3 innings max...Bugg and Stallings each gave up a run. LSU never lost the lead they got with Person on the mound.

Right, however if Person hadn't been "assigned" prior to the game starting to only pitch the 3 innings, then Bugg likely would have been designated the win even though we had the lead prior to him entering the game. Requiring the starter to go 5 to get the win is an awful rule.
