I am in the market for a used jeep and looking at the TJ models. I know there are many jeep owners here and I wanted to know the opinion on the 4cylinder with the 5 speed trans? It seems like all the tj's im finding within my budget are the 2.5.

Be sure and check the recalls. It seems that some models have an exploding gas tank problem.

4 cylinders are cheaper because most do not want them. Harder to resale.

4cylinder TJ? Didn't know they offered this.

Why not stick with in the inline six. It's one of the best engines Jeep offered in the TJ's & JGC.

A lot of people I've known that owned one, myself included, ended up with metal shavings in the oil pan. Mine was bad enough to block oil flow causing the oil pressure to randomly drop to zero.

The 4 banger is horrible. Save a few more thousand and get the 4.0 or go get something else.

I have A 78 with a 401cid, but the 4.0 is the way to go as per friends that have had both.

My Jeep had the 4.0. Incredible motor. Could not kill it. Mom had the 4 cyl, scary trying to get to HWY speeds in BR.

Always go with the bigger engine. Also, never buy a Chrysler product.

My first car was a 95 Cherokee and had the 4.0 6 cylinder. It was a beast. I can't begin to explain how badly I treated that car and it just kept running with zero issues. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

I had a 2000 4cyl 5 speed. It wasn't that bad. But the 4 liter is much much better if you plan on modding it at all.

I think some here are confusing the TJ 2.5l 4-cylinder with some other variant. The 2.5's are basically a 4.0 minus the center two cylinders, cast iron block and heads. Nothing fancy but they are pretty tough little engines. Lots of parts out there too.

For the trail, the 2.5 is fine. If you want to drive it on the interstate, get the 4.0.

1999-2002 4.0's had a bad cylinder head casting. Head casting number 0331 liked to crack between the #3 and #4 cylinder.

The 3 speed auto was near bullet proof as well. I just sold an 01 TJ sahara with 101k miles for $7k so the deals are out there.

I bought a 1997 TJ new with the 2.5L, it was so underpowered I considered it unsafe, and sold it after 3 years. I later bought a used 2000 TJ with the 4.0L which I still have, the difference in power is incredible.

My wife has a TJ with the 4.0, 6 speed, and it is awesome. My in laws have a TJ with the 2.5 that they pull behind their motor home, and it's a complete piece of shite. I never dreamed there'd be such a difference btw the 4 and 6, but there is. I drove it to BR once, from New Roads, and had to put it in 3rd just to make it up the bridge. Get the 4.0 or something else entirely. Don't buy a 2.5 Jeep.

Not an expert - I would wait for LSUNURSE to bring her views about which one - she owns one and her SO also - I believe Butter's has the Hasbro rig for the back yard.
