*In the minds of the media should I say.

That's probably sounded a lot worse than I meant it..

One possible answer I think is that people can identify more with the plane crashers if they travel a lot. Maybe the topic is more sensationalized.

But then again, most people that post here are in college or have family/friends in college.

I can't help but think that if the attack in Kenya happened in other parts of the world, it would be more widely publicized.

So I don't know.

Close to what I would have said...

We all could be on a plane with a suicidal pilot. That could have been us.
We don't all attend college in Kenya, and thus aren't at risk of African tribal disputes.

True. I just thought it was an interesting parallel being that there was an equivalent death toll but a large difference in coverage.

You're right. It's a shame.

150 murders are nothing compared to the mass killings over there over the years!

I watched Sahara last night. General Kazim summed it up best when he said, "Don't worry. It's Africa. Nobody cares about Africa."

That attack in that mall in Kenya got a lot of coverage on the news

Well that's easy.

A suicidal co-pilot locking himself in the cockpit and taking 150 people with him is out of the ordinary.

150 people getting killed in Africa is pretty much business as usual because Africa is a shithole.

That's because the mall is in an expat area of Nairobi and a lot of Europeans were inside.

And much of the American black population want reparations for being removed from Mother Africa. It's still 1700s tribal warfare bs over there.

150 people were killed in that plane crash and it's all over the news and people are talking about it nonstop.

150 killed in Kenya this morning, most of which were university students gunned down at their school, and that garners a lot less attention.

What's the reason for this?
Hegemony is firmly entrenched there. No need for outrage. Now it's just a matter of maintenace.

Shock and outrage is still neccessary in the ME to achieve similar results.

In the weeks after April 6, 1994, 800,000 men, women, and children perished in the Rwandan genocide, perhaps as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were murdered because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it.

Barely made the news then.
