Back in my coaching days we had almost the exact situation. Had a special needs kid that wore "0". After his jr. year we gave him a letter jacket. Had a kid on the team in his grade that didn't letter, his momma pitched a damn fit. We had to take his jacket from him. So, our rule was a kid had to enter 5 varsity qtrs to letter, 1st two football games I put his arse at Super Safety! Lined him up about 40 yards behind everybody got flagged all 5 times for having 12. Didn't care, got him his jacket the second ballgame. He wore it in the 100 degree heat. Needless the say that momma was not real happy with me!

It blows my mind that a parent would care about this, or even a student. I could understand the school being a little pissy with not being asked in advance, but most schools wouldn't try to take it back.

It just blows my mind that a parent would be concerned about that enough to write a note.

It is mind-boggling that people would get so fired up about this.

Its just high school.

Its just a letter.

Let the kid wear the letter.

No its not. I lettered as a freshman for varisty football because i was faster than a lot of others and played on kickoff/return teams. At a 6A high school. An acheivement is winning a championship or getting a scholarship, whether its academic or athletic.

Exactly. You can earn a letter by playing for an 0-10 football team. "Congrats to all your hard work, you came out and played football while not being one of the 0 people who were cut. Additionally you practiced and tried in games and almost maybe won one"

And people bitch about society giving "participation trophies". A letter is just that.

My senior year, our football team went to state and dominated the regular season. We had freshmen playing the fourth quarters when we were up 50, and they lettered because of that.

Seriously? One kid has the odds stacked against him on living a normal life, the other kids just suck at sports but have fully functioning brains.

Yep, it's on mine.

If you even have to ponder the question regarding the "level of achievement" that a varsity letter warrants, then you're going to need a lot of participation trophies in life.

So you agree that all those grades you got-way before high school-meant something important. So important that you could do things like fail or pass grades, etc.?

Again, no problems with the Mom trying to go about this. I have a problem with how she went about it. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I earned 4 Varsity letters in div.1 college.

-Suck on deez nuts OT lounge

ETA:
A very famous actor wanted to buy a letter from our program. We shot him down. I'm certain we'd give this kid or someone like him a letter.

Classic straw-man. We're debating varsity letters, not grades. Do you understand that? I know it's kind of iffy and hard to tell since this is a thread about a varsity letter.

my FIL lettered in football and baseball at Notre Dame, played with theisman...I mean the big time days.

I'm starting to think it's possible some people think more of their high school letter than he does of his college letter.

I get the "it's not fair to the other kids" argument, but is anyone going to talk to a retarded kid about life being fair. Kids need to learn that life isn't fair anyway. If you have DS, I don't think you need to learn that lesson

The OT's serious need to bitch about something...

Seriously though I coached little league baseball for a few years.. I never gave participation trophies.. I would not take part in it.. It was never really well received by some parents.

But hey.. As a kid I always thought it was dumb... B/c who the hell gets a trophy for winning 1 out of 12 games...

This on the other I don't feel is really the same.. B/c its something that kid would be able to cherish his entire life... B/c if a normal guy is still holding on to the glory days of HS..

Then he's this guy

Do you not understand that a varsity letter is an achievement? You can say it isnt all you want, but it doesnt make you right. The sky is blue, fact. A varsity letter is an achievement, fact

I thought we were discussing achievements. There are more than one type. Again, I'll say this: There's nothing wrong with what the Mom's trying to do with her son. Why not figure all this out beforehand though?

I've said it before in this thread. It's simple: Mom should've done her homework before instead of bellyaching after.

Varsity letters are earned.. What is not stated is whether the team and Coach felt that letter was earned by playing in a special needs league and maybe through team spirit/moral or whatever you'd like to call it. If the kid is around the team in any capacity and shows a true love for the game, the good assuredly out ways in negatives here.

But you can use the "below average" part to show that you were such a hard worker and got a start spot anyway.

Srs, you gotta know there's some guys that list their Team Captain status on the ol job app.
