That's fricked up. I'm proud to say one of my friends with Downs manages to hold a job and live in a group home.

A varsity letter is an achievement. That is a simple fact
No its not. I lettered as a freshman for varisty football because i was faster than a lot of others and played on kickoff/return teams. At a 6A high school.
An acheivement is winning a championship or getting a scholarship, whether its academic or athletic.
A varsity letter doesnt mean shite once you graduate.

Back in my coaching days we had almost the exact situation. Had a special needs kid that wore "0". After his jr. year we gave him a letter jacket. Had a kid on the team in his grade that didn't letter, his momma pitched a damn fit. We had to take his jacket from him. So, our rule was a kid had to enter 5 varsity qtrs to letter, 1st two football games I put his arse at Super Safety! Lined him up about 40 yards behind everybody got flagged all 5 times for having 12. Didn't care, got him his jacket the second ballgame. He wore it in the 100 degree heat. Needless the say that momma was not real happy with me!

Apparently, people on TD that still have their jackets
Seems pretty obvious the ones that do.

Typical special needs privilege...
High school is SERIOUSLY guys
ETA that's sarcasm btw. If you're upset this kid has a jacket, you are a dick.
This isn't about participation awards. It's about not being a tPOS to a special needs kid over something he's excited about and nobody else gives a shite about.

But what is or isn't an achievement?
If you even have to ponder the question regarding the "level of achievement" that a varsity letter warrants, then you're going to need a lot of participation trophies in life.

Once again, they should make it possible for him to get a letter. Stop being irrational and emotional and actually read our posts
Right. But the fact of the matter is they don't have a program in place for that, so it is irrelevant. Maybe they can set it up for challenged children in the future. But this particular kid in this particular situation shouldn't have to strip the piece of cloth his mom ironed on his jacket off.

He's a cool kid. Someone made fun of his disability, and he immediately retorted with "at least my issues are because of an extra-chromosone... you're just ugly".

no emotions at all really. It's a no brainer, who gives a shite decision. Let the retarded kid feel better about himself. They give out honorary degrees don't they? degrees are a much bigger deal than a stupid letter.

That's right, let's focus on the real issue here - the mother of a downs syndrome kid is ignorant and lazy for wanting to do something that was going to mean the world to him.
Where did I say it was wrong of her to try and get this done? I question the process, not the motivation or impetus. Huge difference.

lol at people in here acting like "the letter must be earned". It's a fricking HS varsity letter, not some prestigious rhodes-scholarship type honor.

Means nothing, but to this kid it could mean the world
How do we know this for a fact though? Maybe it meant nothing until mom went and bought it and told her son that the letter made him even more special or whatever.
For all we know, it didn't mean jack shite to the kid. He was probably happy just being able to play for the team.

quote:Yall would hate the Special Olympics. There are clear cut winners and losers. The kids that dont get 1-3 absolutely lose it and cry their eyes out when they dont get to stand on the podium. But you know what? When they get older, they learn and grow just like your "normal" kids. These downs kids are so much more intelligent than people give them credit for. When parents actually accept and take the kids gloves off, it is amazing how much they actually grow and better themselves. The worst thing for them is the people/parents that refuse to allow them to do this. The proper way to handle this situation was to setup a specific program for special needs kids where they still have the opportunity to "earn" their letter
This.
This is an opportunity to each ALL OF THE OTHER KIDS WHO LETTERED a lesson; rather than a chance to teach the one mentally retarded kid that he must "win to get a trophy".
While I don't necessarily agree with the "everyone gets a trophy" stuff, I also don't go full crazy on the other side of the spectrum. It isn't that black or white.

So you agree that all those grades you got-way before high school-meant something important. So important that you could do things like fail or pass grades, etc.?
Again, no problems with the Mom trying to go about this. I have a problem with how she went about it. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I wonder how many guys in this thread list their HS varsity sports on their job application?
