you know the better the kids you have, the less you need to practice...

It's easy to spot the non-athletic types on here that are bitter because they couldn't make a team or never even played.

My experience is twice/weekly. Could last two hours.
That's what we do with our 9/10 y.o. live arm team.

"Tournament"? I assume u don't mean all-star tourn. too early for that. Assume you mean a regular team that is doing a tournament soon?
Anyways, three times a week would be about right. Divide into stations like said before. In the hitters section have the on-deck batter playing fungo against the fence. Keep everyone busy all the time. At 12 year old you are beginning to be able to tell the future high school players from the rest. try to eliminate bad habits.

Dropping generalizations early in the morning today are we? I bet you were a helluva 12 year old ball player.

3x a week for 2-2 1/2 hrs. Split in to stations and go for 20 minutes per station. Take a 5 minute break between rotations.
Indi stations:
batting (soft toss & tee work)
infield ( grounders and situations)
Outfield (fly balls and situations)
Group practice. (20 minutes):
Work infield and outfielders (making sure all know their responsibilities for their position) and go through situations.
Break into teams of 3 and do live pitching and hitting. 9 in the field and 3 bat until they get 3 outs and then rotate.
End practice.
eta: if your son is 12 and your middle school has a baseball team I suggest your son starts swinging a -3 (drop 3) this season. Going from 50/70 infield to 60/90 is huge and i have seen some kids struggle.
As 1 poster mentioned on this site many months ago:
60/90 baseball is a dream killer.
-3 bats is the Undertaker.

Don't swing a -3 bat at 12? That's stupid. You're body will be ready for a drop 3 when it's time. A lot of physical maturity happens between 12 and 14-15, when you'll need to swing a -3. My son used a -8 at 12, -5 at 13 and used a -3 the fall before HS, perfect progression. Why screw up your 12 yr season swing at bat you can't get around!
The next step after 50/70 is 54/80 so you're not going straight to 60/90.

Probably enough for professional baseball teams, but for overzealous, type A dad coaches of young boys 3 times a week isn't half of what is thought to be needed.

Travel baseball is killing the game. Just a heads up. Kids have no idea how to actually play baseball when they get to the upper levels.

It's the truth. Reasons why travel baseball is killing the game.
- Kids don't understand the fundamentals of the game. They just go play. They don't know how to bunt, hit a cutoff man, fly ball priority, etc. When a ball goes in the outfield, every team just tries to get it into the infield ASAP, with no regard or intention to where the ball is going.
- It is killing arms. Arms have no rest time. Arms used be used from Febuary through July then it would have a few months off until late Oct, November with light work to get ready for Febuary. Now arms are throwing 12 months and causes arm problems and weak arms when they get to the high school levels. I can tell that the average pitchers doesn't have near the velocity that they did just 6-8 years ago.
- Being average is ok. You strike it , it's ok, you get 17 more at bats that day. Guess what, striking out and making and error aren't ok. Are they going to happen? Yes. But they are not ok and kids shouldn't be told it is ok. Also you get put out of a tournament you still go to Buffalo Wild Wings and hang out with your friends whether you won or not. Losing has no consequence. Average is ok. It's all bullshite.

your post is absolute blasphemy. I understand your logic about the kids arms becoming fatigued over the course of a year, but any responsible parent will make sure there kid is feeling fine before playing a game. I totally understand how working out your arm all year long makes your arm weaker than a kid playing video games for 9 months out of the year, NOT. Travel team players don't know the fundamentals of baseball? LOL come on man, you can't be serious. I have come to the conclusion that your kid is bad at sports and didn't get asked to be on the team.

I don't have kids. I work in the upper levels of baseball. Cubs Manger Joe Madden agrees with me albeit for different reasons that are very legitimate.

I would love to see the number of managers who disagree with you.

So let me guess, you are a dad that coaches a travel ball team. Do you teach how to bunt properly? How to field a ground ball propery? A bunt defense? Fly ball communication? When to hold on the runner at 1st and when not to? 1st and 3rd situations and how to handle them offensively and defensively? How to take a lead? How to move a runner from 2nd with 0 outs to third? How to score a guy from 3rd with less than 2 outs?
Or do you just set a lineup and say go 45 times a year and think you are Bobby Cox?

Pretty solid but I take some exception with this.. It's ultimately a game, one in which children play to foremost have fun.. Travel ball isn't exactly every kid gets a trophy format.. It is ok to strike out or committ an error.. Learning and progressing is more important at the youth level than some wasted effort towards complete perfection.. Ultimately, tgar ideal will drive kids out of the game
