Hmmmm, not necessarily. Mississippi is under investigation by the DOJ for not reporting sexual assaults. Their defense has literally been "Oh, you were asking for it and probably liked it." And I believe sexual assault in prisons are on the rise.
It still doesn't happen to everyone that goes to jail. Thats my point.
Going to prison doesn't mean you're going to be arse raped. Literally millions of people go to jail without getting arse raped

Mississippi prisons are a joke. The Commissioner for the prison just got convicted on federal bribery charges and I always see a new face because the guards ate constantly getting arrested for either banging the prisoners or sneaking contraband in to them. The thugs run these prisons and if one wants to put his weewee in your stomach, I don't see who is going to protect you.
Federal guards here are legit, though. They are actually qualified.

Back to the question.
Yes I would definitely risk it. Half court shots with no one guarding you aren't that hard. Very confident, WITH A LOT OF PRACTICE IN AN ARENA, I could make at least one.

You pay those same people to not do that.

I would not do it. I might hit one half court shot under normal circumstances out of 20 but not under pressure like that
Posted on 3/5/15 at 3:55 pm to WarhawkRebel
I would do it....I know I can make 1 of 20.

the expected value works out so yes, you should do it
$1,000,000 per shot vs 36.5 days in jail per shot
ETA: I believe that's how it's done

It's not
Eta: although now I'm questioning how I'd find the expected value myself. So frick if i know

What would suck about this is if you miss your first 10 or so you'll start feeling the pressure of prison. Better make an early shot.

With no time restraint, yes. If the first one or two of that day went terrible, back to the drawing board, come back, try again.
I'm assuming after 2 years you just have a felony "Lost a Bet" on your record that wouldn't impede your ability to live life after prison? If going to prison affects my ability to work an actual job, that changes things.
ETA: This would actually be a fun little Made-For-TV series if they put a time restraint on it assuming the dude didn't nail it early.

quote:I could be wrong, but this is how I found the expected value based on a 5% chance of a making a single shot.
Eta: although now I'm questioning how I'd find the expected value myself. So frick if i know
Probability of making at least 1 shot is easier to calculate as 1 - (the probability of not making one shot): 1 - (.95^20) = 0.64151.
Then the expected value should be the probability of making a shot multiplied by the reward: 0.64151*$20,000,000 = $12,830,282.
Now this would be incomplete because you would have to figure the costs of not making a shot 36% of the time (e.g., lost income, loss of future income, debt increasing etc.).
I also think that the probability of making a single shot will change with each successive miss because the psychological pressures will change, but I think this is roughly a good way to figure it out.

If I did this, I would take out an insurance policy and hire a good lawyer. Have to keep something in your back pocket.

quote:Great point. You could not only offset the costs of two years in prison, but given the expected value of winning, actually make more money than normal.

I have always been really good at half court shots. I don't think I've ever missed ten in a row in my life. Seems like a no brainer, but the pressure could get tough. Miss the first 10, and I'm suddenly wishing I didn't take the deal.

If I could have a week or more to practice I think would consider it. If the offer was presented to me on the spot and it was a take it or leave it right now option I would pass.

quote:This is really a great scenario for a psychology/economics study. We do typically have loss aversion so even though the expected value is so large, the prospect of prison may be too much.

Bosh is money. 10/20 is possible from him.

I would definitely take the chance. I'm 100% confident in my ability to hit one.
