I'm in college. I've got some money coming in from some relatives in a few weeks. Should I invest part or all of it, or save it? It'll be about $1,000

I'm assuming you might need this money for emergencies.
However, if your parents are your financial backstop then I guess you have free reign

Save it. Too small for investments.

invest it in black on the roulette table
if you lose you'll still have the same amount you did yesterday

$1,000 in college is a lot of money, at least for me it was. Don't blow it on booze and chicks. Use it for gas and food to help with some of the burden.

If he doesn't have an emergency fund yet then he needs to save it. If he has an emergency fund of at least $1,000 already, then it's never, ever, ever, EVER too small for investments.

I disagree whole heartedly. Booze and chicks will never be as good as they are in college.
Go have fun with this money. You have your whole life to be responsible. Live a little.

when I was in college, this is what I would have done:
A) put $750 in my savings account for expenses (rent, utilities, gas, etc.)
B) taken $250 and treated myself to a nice meal, filled our keg, thrown a house party on a Thursday night prior to going to Tigerland

If you don't have any stupid debt (credit card or other)...
In college, gotta vote "blow it"

College is the only time as an adult you are allowed to be irresponsible.
Now if it were a little bit bigger windfall that is different.
Use it to fund experiences.

If you don't have some money in savings - save it.
If you have savings, or parents with unlimited funds... make sure your car is in good shape.
Once that happens, if you are close to graduating and need a nice suit, go buy one.
If after all of that you have money left, have a crawfish boil and invite over a bunch of attractive members of the gender that you enjoy dating.

Put half into savings and use the other half (or three quarters) to GO. Travel to someplace you've always wanted to see...buy a student Eurail pass and backpack across a couple of countries. Or use the dough to fund gas for a coast-to-coast camping trip w/a couple of buddies. Time is cheap for you at this stage of your life.
Use the money to expand your horizons, not your wallet.

i agree with saving if he doesn't have an emergency fund, however if he does have some emergency money, i think its ok to blow/enjoy it. $1000 would be a very small investment, and that 1k can provide a lot of fun while you are young, single and in college. whether its a vacation, a nice tv, or some crazy partying, you really only live once.

Yep. I regret not doing more international travel with the poors(college kids) and seeing Europe on the cheap. I can't bring my wife/kid to a hostel anymore.
