New restaurant opening and I got a job working there part time.
I am starting as a "helper" with becoming a bartender the target.
It's going to be really interesting analyzing things from a new perspective, and I am really excited about this.
I don't know if I will have any influence but I hope to educate them about microwaved steaks and BMC beer.

haha!
Yes, much older than the usual suspects starting something like this.
I will last because I know it is hard.
I will have fun shoveling ice and being the go to.
I'm a lawyer not a doctor.
This is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I will do just fine because I am doing it like a hobby.
But thanks for all the encouragement guys.

You like picking up after strangers and serving them lemonade? Why don't you try fishing or model airplanes?

OK, guys. TiA is finally working on getting some useful job skills and you guys are giving him shite. C'mon, man!
FWIW, I moonlighted as a waiter/bartender for years. I had a lot of fun with it...

No, I am a good one. That is why I can do this. Of course I'm not a slimebucket (aka litigator), so that helps too.

Sure, why not? There is obviously much more to it than that.

I fish (poorly), kayak, and stuff. Just something different to try.

Except I'm the old guy-sans the experience. (and if only it was that easy-I looked for a long time to land this one because of the obvious weirdness of it.)
Heck this board is a big impetus towards this endeavor. The years here have given me a greater interest in all things food and beverage including the bar and restaurant industry.
My new place is in a beautiful setting on the marsh in Savannah, and it will be a blast learning about how it all works.
I'm at a place in life where I don't care about advancing (for this job), and I am grateful for the opportunity.
I know it will be hard, but it sounds more fun than running, biking or lifting, all of which I hate.

You will do fine. I dabbled in this industry for 5 years before the one I am in now, and the hardest thing you will face is the lifestyles and culture of the service industry. Don't get caught up in the relationships with the other staff, stay away from going for drinks all the time at end of shift, and respect everyone - even the dishwasher.

Congrats man. I bar backed at Tsunami in BR during college. Was not easy.

This is the exact advice I'd give to someone entering the service industry. Especially if you're married. It's a totally different lifestyle than you're used to and it's very easy to get sucked in.
