no, I walk. Resting heart rate stays the same, and i don't breath heavily.

the game of golf is hitting the ball though, not walking after it. sports require that physical movement, golf doesn't. and even then, you're still not raising your heart rate to about 70% of max like in sports...as you are just walking.

then every multiplayer video game by that description is a sport.

any definition of a sport that included golf will end up including video games, paper football, and other activities people wouldn't consider to be sports as "sports".

a sport, to me, should be defined as a competition involving more than 1 individual (or teams of individuals) in which the competitors (or certain individuals on the team) experience either continuous, or short transient periods of an elevated (70-80% of max) heart rate SECONDARY to physical activity, and not due to chemicals (ie, caffeine) or certain biomolecules (ie, hormones).

Under your definition baseball is on the verge of being a sport

So long as we got an out of shape fatass playing a hilly course, it's a sport. Because I guarantee his heart rate will reach 70% max if he's walking and carrying his bag. Hell, probably if he's in a cart and has to walk up a hill to a tee or green.

physical movement that gets you to around 70% of your max heart rate like in sports? no, it doesnt.

and if some fatass gets out of breath walking up an elevated plane, do you really want to actually call that activity a sport?

Golf requires physical movement. Period.

And no I wouldn't be inclined to call that a sport. Because I don't subscribe to your definition that sports are based upon heart rate.

Walking 18 in golf is hard work. 4 hours in the sun, swinging a golf club, and never being able to sit down. I find it's pretty tough to stay focused and hit good shots. Where as, I can still play other sports well when I'm gassed.

The OP' s definition of a sport is the dumbest thing I have ever read. Followed by examples that contradict his definition

Greater than one individual

Then list skiing

so heart rate is your exclusionary requirement.

thanks for that information.

Buy a large basket of balls, and hit each ball so that it travels 300 yards and strikes the sign in the practice range with the 300 on it.

Then get back to us.

This is the truest definition of a sport

quote:

A sport is an activity that involves competition, where competitive advantage is gained through superior athleticism or dexterity, and is governed by a set of rules.

Your premise that the key and only immutable characteristic of a sport is heart rate is severely flawed; therefore any argument based on that premise is moot.

I know you think you were an athlete engaged in a sport while playing soggy biscuit at fish camp because your heart rate got going, but that's just not true.

To me, a sport is a competition that is based on physical ability... but not necessarily athleticism.

Not all sports require athletes.

So, sports like golf, darts, bowling, and even racing require a person to have great skill, even if it isn't athletic skill. Race car drivers have to physically practice driving a car, for example. So those are sports, but they don't require athleticism.

Some sports require athletes like basketball and football.

But poker and chess are not sports because they aren't based on physical abilities.

Therefore, golf IS a sport, but you don't have to be an athlete to compete.

but billiards is, because it requires hand/eye coordination and subtle muscle control.

the fine muscle control required in billiards exceeds anything in Greco-Roman wrestling, which the OP considers a sport.

I consider pool to be a sport, sure. You just don't have to be an athlete to play.

It's based on physical skill.

Definition of a sport:
quote:

an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

And you talk about heart rate and physical exertion... Go play 18holes, hitting every shot, and tell me how your body feels after or the next day. And you don't even have to walk, use a cart if you want. You still will feel some type or soreness the next day. And if you actually walk like they do on tour, you'll be even more sore.

And the fact that golf is an individual sport makes it even that more difficult. You can't rely on a teammate to do things. It's all on you. Same with individual tennis. Would you consider that a sport?

Oh and did you know that according to the world sporting encyclopedia, pretty good source, that there are over 8,000 sports or sporting games. And different classifications. There are physical sports and mind sports. Here, take a look. LINK

You can have your own opinion of what is and isn't a sport, but it's wrong. You can't just make up your own definition of soemthing or classify things in a certain category based off of your opinion and expect everyone to agree with you. Especially with something like sports. Your definition of a sport is your opinion, but it's wrong.

And I am absolutely horrible at golf. I'm a solid athlete and in good shape and all that. And I'm good at football and basketball and can run fast and jump high and all that shite. And I'm absolutely horrible at golf. Because golf is hard as frick.
