I really think crawfish farmers need to make a public relations thing with crawfish like the do with Punxsutawney Phil.
I can just see a bunch of coonasses on a stage saying, "Dat der Kaplan Crawfish Clyde don seent his shadow... 2 more months of high prices, yeah."

It is always something isn't it.

List of excuses:
too much water
not enough water
colder than normal
hotter than normal
Whatever temperature or water level they have each year is always above or below normal so that prices can mysteriously rise when they choke the supply.

I'm not one to be confrontational, but the reality is farmers have a commodity that is well liked and therefore always has a demand. If you could make more money for less quantity every person in their right mind would do it; unless you are just stupid when it comes to business. Farmers are just like gasoline prices, everyone is going to buy them, so why not drive the price up and make more profit at the price point customers are willing to pay.
I know I would do the same if I ran my own crawfish business. Wouldn't you?
Just to clarify, I do not agree with them receiving substitutes from the federal government because of a "bad" season. That is the nature of their industry and they should be able to ride the highs and deal with the lows.

I agree wholeheartedly. Just call a spade a spade though. Quit with all the excuses. It is just a cheap marketing trick. Market it on the weather and most will pay more. Market it on wanting to make more profit and that willingness goes way down.

quote:Too cold, too hot, not enough or too much rain. Prices have been outrageous for several yrs now, and I love to eat them, but you have to be a fool to pay $36 for 4 lbs (what Tunk's is charging the suckers - and they are lined up begging to get bent over). No offense to crawfish farmers but

And the farmers are the ones laughing, because just like why a dog licks his balls, "because he can!"

I don't give a rat's frick how much the guy makes farming them. I hope he gets rich. I'm only going to buy them though, when the price makes sense to me. Crawfish are becoming more and more popular outside of LA, which also drives the price up.

I want to know who the first guy is that sets the price of his crawfish that everyone seems to follow. I mean that has to be it right? Because getting a group together to determine what the price will be for the season would be a violation of antitrust and be considered price fixing and I know that no legitimate crawfish farmer would do that.

About a month ago there was a farmer interviewed on the news and he said conditions couldn't be much better and that there would be an abundance this year at a reasonable price. I believed that like I believe Kate Upton will be waiting on me at home today.

Troy Landry
There is a very small group of people that "set prices". It is nearly impossible to change prices as a fisherman. Even when they have tried to play the supply demands, the demographics of craw fishermen are just too different for my farm's operation to have ANY effect on the market.

As long as you can buy them with food stamps the price will stay high.
I pay a shiteload of taxes and don't buy crawfish because it's not the best use of my money. They just aren't worth $4/lb to me. Elroy an Danisha though, will buy the frick out of them with their LA Purchase credick card all day long.

I do a couple-three burls a year up here in Bham. Have a guy who makes two runs a week to LA and delivers them. I really don't look at it as a sound food investment to feed my family. I just like getting a few sacks and throwing a party. I'm the problem, but I like crawfish. And beer.
