January '78
I was courtside. It was truly the "Deaf Dome" that night.
Goose Givens threw an errant pass sealing the win. Brown called the reserves "Reinforcements."
Rick Maddock even scored

quote:Floyd was the Student Section "Bench" guy favorite that didn't play much and coach Brown knew the game was in hand when the SS started yelling "Floyd Floyd Floyd." Mr.Bailey would start smiling on the bench when the chant started and would be in the game soon.
The play that brought the house down was the dunk by the double knee-braced Floyd "The Dubberly Dude" Bailey.
All you kiddies have no clue how the "Assembly Center" atmosphere was back then. It was as electric as Tiger Stadium and that's no exaggeration.........

I as there. First year of graduate school. But the next year, when we beat Bama to win the SEC title .....never been in a basketball environment like that. Loudest Ive ever heard the PMAC.

I was part of the front row lunatics back then. Never missed a game until this one. My GF at the time went to Southeastern and had a sorority formal that night. I caved like a big ol puss and went to the formal. She ended up in Florida and we stay in touch. I never have forgave for this and remind her often.

And for those who don't remember Floyd Bailey had some monster games before he injured both knees and was severely limited. About 6-6 and 245 with a good vertical and a force under the basket. I seem to remember some games where he would put up 15 points and 12 rebounds and block a couple of shots several times around 74 and 75 or so. He would have been incredible if his knees were good on that 78-79 team

Present and accounted for.
Students would fill the Assembly Center (not the PMAC yet) so early, that LSU would have local high school teams play a game to entertain them before the college teams took the court to warm-up.

And they let the banner down early
Posted on 2/10/15 at 8:49 am to JEAUXBLEAUX
Banner came down early vs. Wimp Sanderson and Bama. SEC Champions banner. UK was not involved.

80 was pretty epic too. We lost at the end but that was a great time for LSU Basketball.

I was there in our frats student section. That game was insane. We talked to some Kentucky fans afterward who were very gracious in their loss . . . said our boys played with immense heart and fearlessness.

Was Ricky Roby on that Kentucky team?
That guy won a championship on every level.

Never forget it. 1/78...probably greatest game ever played in the Deaf Dome...that's right...the PMAC nickname back in those days. The crowd noise was deafening. That game put LSU basketball back on the Map for many years. It was a milestone moment in the history of LSU Basketball.
Now...can this team do it again?!!

It was the year before I went to LSU but my friend and future roommate at LSU (we went to high school in Maryland) called up all drunk after the game to tell me about it. He was screaming. Of course my dad picked up the phone.
Luckily my Dad was pretty cool and knew my buddy well.
That is the one game when people ask that I wish I was able to attend. Kentucky was #1 I believe.
