Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Deer Study Leader Scott Durham told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Thursday that the state's hunters have gotten much more selective when it comes time to pull the trigger.

During the 2013-14 season, Louisiana led every state in the nation with the highest percentage of harvested bucks aging 3 1/2 years or older. During that season, the most recent for which completed statistics are available, 68 percent of all bucks harvested in the state were at least that age.
Following Louisiana were Arkansas (67 percent), Oklahoma (62 percent), Texas (58 percent) and Kansas (46 percent).
In the nation overall, 34 percent of harvested bucks were 3 1/2 or older. That's up from 32 percent the previous year and way up from 23 percent in 2003-04.
Louisiana ranked second in lowest percentage of yearling bucks killed. Only 15 percent of bucks taken by Bayou State hunters that year were yearlings. The state trailed only Arkansas (8 percent).
Nationwide, 36 percent of harvested bucks were yearlings. In 1989, that number was 62 percent.

During the 2013-14 season, Louisiana hunters took 93,072 antlered bucks, ranking the state seventh in the 11-state Southeast region. Texas led the category with 330,535 bucks, followed by Georgia (137,025), South Carolina (114,482) and Mississippi (108,664).
Two seasons prior, Louisiana hunters took only 73,425 bucks.
The report also states that, despite a nearly statewide four-month archery season, only 7 percent of the deer taken in Louisiana during the 2013-14 season were shot with a bow.
Another 12 percent were taken with muzzleloaders, with 81 percent falling from rifle shots.

can we get some statistics for sherburne? i'm thinking 1% of all deer harvested were mature bucks on public areas within driving distance of baton rouge/new orleans.

Indian Bayou is now 4 point on one side, that should increase mature deer harvest there...

further proof that no one is reporting their kills

I would believe that 68% of the deer killed where spikes before I would believe those figures.

It really does. Maybe all the bitching is having an effect on the brown/down crowd.

Somebody forgot to add in the numbers for Marepaus Swamp.
Or they just aren't reported....

This is all very surpising given the fact that we can take 6 deer in Louisiana.

Nobody asked me about the deer I killed. I also personally know 2 people that killed their limit of bucks and all were first year racks. Im almost certain whoever conducted this survey didn't ask them either.

It's because of where the data is coming from. It's not even close to being accurate.

I read somewhere that it was only on DMAP properties.

That would make sense. There is no blank for age on antler tags.
