Urbanspoon or Yelp for restaurant research?

Just curious what everyone here uses as their go to research method and why.

Restaurant reviews are entertainment only, I don't trust other people's, albe'm funny, experiences.

I use urbanspoon, but just to look up restaurant hours and menus. I don't even read the reviews.

Same here except I'm a Yelp man. Their app has come in handy dozens and dozens of times when I'm in a new city and looking for a particular cuisine or scene to check out.

I entirely agree. You have to take everyone's review with a grain of salt, or even sometimes a salt block. Some of the reviews are complete BS. Most are muddled up with bad experiences because people tend to run to their computers over these rather than the good experiences. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone raved about the best sooshi (not a typo) of their life because the cream cheese roll was awesome.
I guess I should have asked, aside from reviews, which of the websites have your favorite go to info. Opentable should be included in this discussion as well.

I use both, but I find myself using Urbanspoon more.
I use Yelp for photos of food. They tend to have a lot more than Urbanspoon. Photos definitely give you an idea of what you are about to get yourself into.
I prefer the numbered scoring system that Urbanspoon uses, rather than Yelp's star system.
But when you're out of town on vacation or something, neither is really useful when you need help choosing a restaurant. If you're not already familiar with the restaurants and area you're considering, it's all pretty vague, frustrating and time consuming.
I had in mind to start a restaurant evaluation site for Baton Rouge and growing from there, but I lack the programming experience to build a good foundation for a site. I just don't want to do it half-arse.

They're both garbage
99% of reviews are 3.5 to 4.5 out of 5 stars. Worthless

Calling them "garbage" is a little strong, but Tripadvisor is pretty much worthless garbage. You'd be hard pressed to find a restaurant with less than 4 stars. I hate that site. Hate it.

I read Trip's hotel reviews when I'm headed to a hotel not of my choosing for a business trip to get a feel for the place. I don't know if I've ever looked at restaurant reviews there other than a few a friend of mine writes because she emails me when she posts them.
I read some of the reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon if I'm there looking for restaurants out of town, but I look for those that are well written and those from folks who write a lot of them, IF I read any.

I've ended up using Yelp, primarily, as I find they have more updated information.
You certainly need to be skeptical reading reviews from any source (including here) you don't know.

I use Yelp to view photos of food at restaurants
For reviews, I trust you guys more than any other.

Same, but I've found even that to be tough.
Girl that I am loosely friends with is one of the top reviewers in BR on there, and she recently gave Rum House and Velvet Cactus RAVE reviews. Based on the consensus here about VC, that makes me nervous to trust her other reviews.

I also look for pictures of food and menus, particularly for those places without a website. There aren't many, but some locally owned places in small cities and towns don't have them.

No doubt. I trust the F&D Board more than any other source.

Yelp, but mostly for directory info (hours/location/specials etc), and for food pix as others have mentioned. Reviews can be worthless on yelp...often posted by the dining illiterate. But a pic is an actual record of what made it to the table....you can tell quite a bit about a place by the look of a plate.

This board is particularly helpful and when you get to know the likes and dislikes etc... of the posters, you're able to figure out a lot. Most will qualify responses if they've eaten something that isn't really their thing. I definitely rely on folks here more than anywhere else by a landslide.

Yelp runs an extortion ring. They call businesses and offer to remove bad reviews if they'll pay them money. Seriously.
