Is Education As Important in Louisiana as Other States?

Talking to some friends here in Dallas who grew up here and are now having kids. They seem to obsess over school districts and test scores. Like literally they are putting down one school district b/c the average SAT score is 1563 and the perceived better districts scores average a 1590 or something. Families will move to one district for middle school and then move again for high school etc based on these SAT averages. Kids get sent to Kumon classes after school to boost their math scores. They will send their 6th and 7th graders to take the PSAT.
I grew up in New Orleans where I don't know anyone who really obsessed like this. Almost every kid I know goes to a private school or Catholic here. They're expected to get good grades and parents are active in their education but not to the point that they will move b/c one school averages 20 points higher on the SAT.
Is this a Texas thing or does this happen all across the country? I almost feel sorry for the kids. The pressure they're under is insane.
ETA: I do know some families move across the lake for the publics in St.Tammany, but I always figured that was more to save money on schools than a better education.

1) Many in Texas obsess over being in the top 10% of their high school class because they gain automatic acceptance to UT.
2) Texas is much more educated than Louisisna. We're usually 49th in nearly every education statistic (thanks, Mississippi).
That said, the crazy helicopter parenting you're describing is caused by bored housewives with too much time on their hands.

Providing the best education for your child is helicopter parenting?

1. No
2. Texas has a bunch of dinosaurs on the ark school boards too. Just not in Dallas.

Texas is more serious about education than Louisiana. That said, Texas is middle-of-the-road. If you want to really be surprised at education obsession, talk to folks in the Northeast.

While it sucks to be 49th, it's kinda misleading. If you remove 2 parishes we are bumped up to the top half.

And if MS could remove a few counties they would be middle of the pack as well. What is your point?

Texas is big on education, relative to Louisiana but is mediocre when compared to New England, northeast and suburban/rural Midwest areas.

My kids have above average genetics, they'll learn wherever they go

I obsess over it when purchasing a house. It plays a huge part. In Louisiana, I would pay attention to the school districts, but would still plan to send my kid to private. I basically did it, because it adds value to your house and makes it easier to sell sometimes. Now that I live in Texas, I paid attention closely, because my kid will actually attend those schools.

First off, no. Is this a joke? Or a troll?
Secondly, Texas>>>>Louisiana is not saying much.

Louisiana constitution only allows budget cuts from health services and education. I think the answer is no as long as Jimmy "Big Chief" Boudreaux is running around lining his pockets.

no
not to our population
just look at the terrible scores and lack of care given by a large chunk of our population. look at the scores of schools that they've turned into babysitting factories. and this isn't a white/black thing, b/c there are plenty of areas where white trash don't put any effort into school. it's a culture thing, and we just have a LOT of people of a bad culture (and part of that culture is not valuing education or putting forth effort to become educated)

being obsessive and controlling is more the "helicopter" stuff. education is just one part of it

We might be that concerned if we actually had good public schools. Parents in La have accepted that they have to send their kids to private school unless they live in the few parishes that have good public schools in La.
