Quartize/Quartz are very nice but the options are limited and it is very expensive compared to granite.
Quartz and Quartzite are two completely different surface options.
Quartz is fairly reasonable but you're right about quartzite... it can get up there in a hurry.

In the house we are currently building, I looked at Quartz and thought it looked pretty cheap. A nice granite looks so much better. Not to mention, its indestructible.

I remodel a house and move every few years, and have found these "exotic" counter tops very expensive. I love the look of recycled glass, but you have to special order them from a factory, and the price jumps. Just not worth it. I get the best prices from independent guys who sell me left overs. You don't have a selection, but I just replaced a bathroom cabinet (60" wide), with a corian top (undermount sink) for $600 combined. Some of these box stores quoted me $1500 just for the countertops.

Exactly.
I love when people say "builder grade" as a generic term.
Just about every manufacturer has a cheaper line of products they sell.

It is my opinion, that granite countertops are completely fireproof.
I have em, cause they came with the house.

I agree. People thinking they need to jump on every latest trend in interior house design all the time is trashier than most things, including a lot of houses with granite countertops.
I just don't like the way most granite looks; I never have.
I have white quartz on the perimeter with a maple butcher block island/breakfast bar. I like the dings in the wood counters that form over time, and the surface isn't cold.

Granite has turned trashy
Apparently, granite is the Ed Hardy of countertops.

I have concrete countertops and absolutely hate them. I moved in a house a friend owned planning on buying it in a few months and it is at the top of the list of why I am not buying. The guy that built the house did them himself to save money and although they look pretty good, they are impossible to keep shiny and always have a dull shine. Not to mention I break plates on them constantly.

Granite is not indestructible. This is a misconception.
This is what I do for a living.
It goes like this:
Granite - Lowest price (unless you do exotic) and lowest performance.
Man-Made Quartz - Best performance, median pricing
Quartzite - Highest price, median performance
Soapstone - About same price as quartz, seems like a lot of maintenance (oiling, waxing, etc.) We have only done like three of these in my six years.
The trend right now is towards quartz. I personally recommend it and it is what most architects are specifying in commercial work now.

True OT ballers are using Calacatta Marble.

Also, concrete is made with chemicals that are really bad for you. You would be really dumb to buy some type 2 from Home Depot and make countertops out of it. No way I would want my food touching that material.

Marble is actually very affordable. The reason is it's a maintenance nightmare.

couldnt be more wrong. It is the lowest maintenance of all major countertop materials (zero, in fact )
Soapstone is totally impervious to heat and all chemicals in its natural state. No acid or base can touch it. You can mineral oil if you want just to even it out as it normally darkens with use. This is totally optional.
The only downside is that it can scratch (it is the densest but also the softest material). This wear is why people like it - it gives a rustic lived-in look. If you dont like the scratches just sand them out (sanding will also reset the darkening in that area).
Soapstone is so awesome. Everything should be made of it

So how much does it cost these days to get 44 sq ft of countertop with cutouts for stove and undercount sink + low end back splash?
