If you are reasonably healthy, how fast should you be able to run a mile?

Is 8-10 minutes good for the first mile? How about total cumulative time for 2, 3 and 4 miles?

I can run a mile in 3 minutes

8 minutes is relatively easy if you are in decent shape. When you are getting over the one to 2 mile mark I would say a decent time is 10 minutes per mile for however many more miles you are able to go.

8 minutes a mile is hard for me to maintain for more than 3-4 miles. They usually stretch to 10 after that. But if you're in running shape it isn't hard to do that for a few miles. And it is pretty easy to get there if you're not. It is the wall you hit around 3.5 miles when you're working up to distance that gets you.

8min mile should be easy

If you're pretty muscular, 8-10 minute mile is a good pace.
If you're skinny, 6-8 minute mile.

For clarity, health has nothing to do with speed (see Jim Fixx). Good shape, aerobically able bodied and age are factors.

you can be perfectly healthy without being in shape.
if you don't ever do any cardio exercise, it might take you 12-14 mins for a mile. total time for 4 miles could be up to an hour.
if you're an adult male in good shape, to me you should be able to get a mile in 8 mins. 4 miles in maybe 40 mins. more than that and you're not in good shape.

Let's just say you are not fat or skinny or built like a football player....no extremes. You are an average Joe of average height and weight.

It depends on several factors. Can you run a mile now? Can you run 3 miles now? If you can run 3-5 miles now (on a regular basis) then you can do a 7-8 minute mile (if only doing one mile). If you run 3-5 miles on a regular basis then an 8-10 minute mile pace is fairly common. People that run marathons can do 8-10 mile pace for the entire race (and the ballers can go sub 7 minute pace).

Yes, 8-10 minutes is good for a reasonably healthy person.
If you want to be an athlete, you need to have a faster time.
In terms of long distance, I start slower than I end. I have a very hard time running better than a 10 minute first mile, but I routinely finish 5ks around the 26 minute mark.

Overall winner in 2015 Louisiana Marathon ran on a 7:04 minutes-per-mile pace. I've surpassed that on one mile sprints, but it's a pretty quick pace--especially to maintain over 26.2 miles.

For males, 7 1/2 to 8 minutes for a casual runner is a very competent time. I would consider anyone "fast" (not track fast, not athletic fast, but just casual "fast") who is running a mile under, say, 6 1/2 minutes. Females, add about 30 seconds to a minute for comparable times.
For cumulative - that's going to vary widely - endurance running is largely a factor of conditioning, tempered by genetics (at least until you get to the elite long-distance runners, which must have both), while raw speed tends to be mainly genetic.
So, for 2 miles, anything under 14 minutes is starting to be casual "fast", for 5k (3.1 miles) that line is probably closer to 24 minutes (29 for females) - and the range starts to expand quite a bit after that.

if you can run a mile without keeling over or stopping to walk you are in relatively decent shape. amazing the number of people who cannot do this.
