2-3 state universities should be closed imo.

It's only a matter of time before they are.

Just cut all liberal arts programs and leave only petroleum engineering and PTEC. Amirite?

Yes! Then 100% of the state's population will be tied to oil. Every Louisianian's dream!

It would also be beneficial to the school(s)if more alumni were willing to contribute to the endowment(s).

Close certain campuses, cut useless fields of study, increase tuition, decrease state funded "scholarships", etc. If you cannot operate these schools without a loss do what private industry does and figure it out without screwing the tax payer. No fricks given here.

Too much waste within universities

It takes two state workers to do the same job as one private industry employee

I think people are getting mid-year budget cuts due to shortfalls mixed up with next year's budget shortfall.

Mid-year is $300m and unless the governor calls the legislature into session he is going to take it all from higher Ed and healthcare.

Next year is a whole different problem. They haven't presented a spending budget yet but it looks like they are going to have around $1.7b less to spend for the upcoming fiscal year. What a cluster.

New Orleans
BR

Other choices:
Laffy
Lake Chuck
Alec
Shreveport

New Orleans and BR should obviously have one, but where would the other one go?

I would think that Nicholls would have to stay open because of it's geography.... i mean, there are many schools in NOLA that could easily absorb each other, as well as Grambling/Tech and NW St. and LSU-S...

Hey dildos, before you go off blaming Jindal for the budget cuts - remember that the dumbass voters in this state have protected all accounts in the budget aside from some healthcare and higher education so they get to feel the brunt of it all. Only options are to raise taxes, which he's not going to do, or cut where he can.

Point the fingers at the people who protected the accounts.

on how we make our money in Louisiana. Lower oil prices = less money. Gotta come up with a long-term plan to substitute the lost money because so much is based purely on oil prices

But but but, I'm saving $30 a month on my gas bill. frick oil prices.

To be fair, the real root of the problem is statewide mismanagement.

And, beyond that, if every last thing in the state that needed funding was solely dependent on oil prices, well that's kind of a problem, no?
