"Honestly", "actually", "basically", "literally"... all overused, often misused, and almost always dull. They betray a writer/speaker's limited vocabulary and imagination.

It's just one of many words of emphasis, that's all. Had a friend once who pronounced the word "lit-trully," which annoyed me to the point that I had to sleep with his wife and terminate the friendship. Beyond that, however, the word has been harmless enough; I use it without shame or embarrassment.

When you say you don't like the word "literally", do you just not like the way people misuse it, or do you literally not like the word?
and if you do like the word and only don't like how it is misused, were you basically not being honest, or just being careless in your word usage?
and don't get caught up in the grey area of someone saying this is literally a shitty thread, because shitty can be synonymous with bad; now if someone said the thread was literally a pile of shite, that would be a figurative reference

I wholeheartedly agree. I hear people misuse "literally" all the time. They think it makes them sound smart, but misusing it proves quite the opposite.
Also hate overuse and misuse of "like." "Like" has become the new "um." Sometimes Judge Judy will ask the twenty-somethings on her show to quit saying "like, " and they become verbally paralyzed. They can't do it. The absolute worst is when a dumbass will include "like" in the things they write.
Starting sentences with "So...." irritates me, too.
