I got:
Freddie Mercury
Syd Barret
Kurt Cobain
Jim Morrison
Amy Winehouse
Who you got? Every time I listen to Queen it reminds me of what an amazing creative talented artist he was and how the world was a better place with him in it.
Who you got?

Nice troll; 8/10
And the answer to this thread is Duane Allman and no one else.

Otis Redding recorded Sitting on the Dock of the Bay four days before he died. He had already gone pretty far musically in a short amount of time and his death cut his career way too short.
He and Duane Allman are the most "what could've been" deaths
ETA: Also I'm not sure Mercury and Barret qualify under this standard. I mean Queen had been going for around 15 years when he died. Barrett did not die early although he lost his mind

You have Cobain and Winehouse over Hendrix?
Easily Hendrix and it's not even close. He transformed an entire genre.

Stevie Ray Vaughan
My overall favorite and biggest personal lost, but his niche was deeply rooted in blues. Hendrix crossed over many boundaries. Although I believe SRV is such a superior musician to Hendrix, Hendrix was a bigger loss to the music world. I would also like to nominate John Bonham. Zeppelin died with him. Hard to believe they made all of the great music they did in less than one decade.

Hank Williams
Jimi Hendrix
Otis Redding
Kurt Cobain
Duane Allman
Jim Morrison
Karen Carpenter
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Elvis Presley
Keith Whitley
In that order, based upon where they were in their careers when they died and their foreseeable future contributions to music from the time of their death going forward.

Mozart
It depends how you look at things. Someone like Hendrix or Allman died right when they were getting into their prime and seemingly starting to go really interesting places. There's a fairly small sample size to where we only saw the beginning of the potential of what they could have been.
Mozart was fairly young when he died, but he was so young and prolific when he started making music that he left behind a huge library for the world to know who he was musically. He still had a complete body of work despite dying young.
